Question about Hawkbill design
Hi all,
I've been thinking of making a Hawkbill. I've got an idea on a variant that maybe you all could comment on.
I've been trying to design one, but, the result is too small for my liking. Would an egg work instead of a ball/tomato?
Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: Severe weather pipes?
Looks like a winner, Bill. At least for the record winter we're expecting here in Spokane.
One suggestion is to put on a couple thin coats of shellac, to protect it from snow and the inevitable drops.

I´m (still, despite my years) a daring driver, but: I didn´t even try to violate the speed limit. (Todd probably would have, though.) Cheerio! Walle Sir, you never, whether through your pipes or your prose, fail to entertain. Thank you in advance for the next time you further amuse us, endear us to...

Re: Bent Egg.....ish....??
To me there are 3 things I immediately noticed. There is a dip around the shank/stem area and overstain where the shank meets the bowl. Also, for some reason the bit looks funny to me, maybe too much like a basket pipe? And the bend in the stem is also too abrupt, need to be more gradual. But I'm j...

Todd,
You've just made my day. I've got a JH Lowe piece of rod that I've not had any idea how to even begin with. Now I have a procedure (love them!) to follow. Thank you very much!

The finish is fine, Sean. I like it a lot. As for the shape, I don't know about "eggish" as much as "freehandish"!

Bill,
Great to see that you've started using briar, not that the cobs weren't great, esp. in person! Hoping to see some of these at a IEPC meeting sometime!

That is fantastic stuff!! Definitely a unique blast. Thanks for sharing! Along the same lines, I have seen pipe work listed on ebay made of Rhamnus (Buckthorn). At first I didn't realize it was and actual wood, thought someone had come up with some resin ore something. I investigated it on wiki and...

Very nice rustication for a newbie! I've got some BW that could use the same treatment.
One question: why didn't you rusticate the entire stummel?

Gee, Kurt! I didn't know you were a nerd!
BTW, I use a drill press with a dremel nylon brush chucked up at high RPM to buff out the craggy rustication. It should work wonders even after applying carnauba. HTH!

Re: rustication
Some parts look great, nice and near-random. Other parts show what looks like dremel tool marks too obviously. I would strive for a more random look. Some makers here really know how to do it well, they've all practiced using single and multiple methods. I lean more toward the multiple or combined t...

Re: more billiards
eric, Are you saying that the draft hole is collapsing when bent? If so, are you using a couple of pipe cleaners inserted in the draft hole before heating and bending? If not, you really can't expect it to remain intact without something in that draft hole to keep the diameter intact. I use two pipe...
