Okay, this thing does accept morse tapers...nice!

Is 5.5" swing over bed enough for turning stummels out on?

I have a little Taig for stem work, though I certainly wouldn't rule out using this guy for stems. I really want a lathe for all of the other operations they can be used for. I'm crossing my fingers, but we'll see. I don't want to just buy any old thing because I *want* one so badly. Getting a tool ...

I shot several more questions off to the seller. Hopin he gets back to me shortly and perhaps I can arrange a visit to have a look at it. I'm hoping it accepts morse tapers, but from the pic, it looks like it's threaded instead. Hard to tell. I don't know if I want it if there's no throughput on the...

this begs another point, and i know it's probably contended, but what are your preferences for draft hole, i've heard of 5/32, but hadn't heard of 9/64... and do you like to finish it off with a 1/16 ? thanks. When you set up to drill the rod with the tapered bit, you mark it so it drills about 3/4...

I'm trying to get some more info on the Rockwell. So far all I've been able to find out is the swing over the bed. They list it as "can turn 12" diameter" rather than swing over bed, but I'm going to assume that's plenty. I might go take a look at it this weekend. Anything I should re...

I can buy a 6" 9/64 bit for about $4 at local hardware store vs. $16 at jamestown Wish that were the case in my neck o' the woods. I scoured every hardware store in my area and nobody had anything long enough. Matt, order a few items to warrant the shipping costs. Even the USA made aircraft bi...

Re: Rockwell Lathe

Anybody know anything about Rockwell lathes? http://harrisburg.craigslist.org/tls/713989855.html I believe Rockwell made some nice lathes, but this one seems kinda high to me for a straight wood lathe in used condition. Also found a Craftsman model #112 12231 but can't seem to find any specs on it ...

I'm sure. In the pics you can see the grain well enough to get an idea. I'm considering getting a length of it just to play around with.

Also found a Craftsman model #112 12231 but can't seem to find any specs on it anywhere on the net that I can get to. Anyone familiar?

There's a real simple solution to dealing with perfectly round shanks. Design your pipe to NOT have one. I'm only kind of half jesting. When done well, it saves the lathe-less a bunch of headaches and frustration.

Yep, what everyone else says. Can't say enough good things about Andrea and PME. You'll get your order and be very pleased with it, I'm sure.

I generally get my stem as close to final outside diameter as possible on my mini-lathe, then put it into the stummel and trace its diameter around the face with a pencil. Then I cut out what I can and start shaping with either files or the disc sander, depending on how much material I have to work ...

The disc sander on that comes in terribly handy for squaring up blocks before drilling. I'd be lost without mine. The belt sander is excellent for rough shaping stems. It took a while to get comfy with it, but now that I am, it's like second nature to use it for this. What changes do you plan to mak...

Variable speed motors are a good bit more expensive than single speed motors. I'm in the process of building a sanding/buffing rig with a 1725 rpm motor and some step pulleys to control the speed. When it's all said and done, the total cost will be approx $200 and the little bit of my time required ...
