measure the inside diameter of the mortise, then test-fit an appropriately sized piece of delrin to it. If it fits, you're golden.

Yeah, I kind of expected the "ask a dozen pipemakers" phrase to pop up here, but you both answered the question and now I feel just a wee bit smarter :) Thanks, fellas.

So, I was reading the link that was posted to Mr. Downie's site and I noticed he said he wet sands the stem and stummel. Just curious, what does wet sanding achieve that standard, dry sanding doesn't? Curious...

Depending on how big you need the stem to be, you can get lucite pen blanks in tortoise/faux amber from most places that sell pen blanks.

when I get past 220 grit, I tend to wear acrylic or latex gloves for the rest of the sanding. Your hands get dirty and sweaty and that transfers to the stummel. The sweat can even allow for areas that won't take stain because of the oils in your skin.

I do what Frank has suggested. I have one set of buffs that's "doubled up", meaning there's two buffs mounted on the arbor. The other is a single buff mounted on an arbor. When I need to get into the tighter spots, I mount up the single buff and I'm able to get to those areas. As an aside,...

While acquiring a lathe as you "first real pipe making tool" is a nice idea on paper, you have to consider the hidden costs of owning one. After you get the lathe, you have to tool it out with proper parts and pieces to make it useful to you, along with the tools to turn with. It gets cost...

I'm a little confused. Is each person to pick their own theme or will there be a universal theme for the entire exchange? I'll post a new thread and a poll for the theme. Once it's voted in, we'll all use that theme in our own interpretation. Gotcha...that's what I thought it was, just wanted to ma...

Been out of the loop for a while, sorry I didn't see this sooner. Been a rough couple of months, but that's a whole other story. kbadkar... I got a Grizzly 1/3 hp 1725rpm motor. I LOVE it. Would it be a type of wood you'd want to make an entire pipe out of? I have no experience with the stuff, just asking. I know it's used for stem and shank decorations but beyond that, I'm right on out.

You can use epoxy with a short cure time(like 5 minute epoxy) and you'll only have to stop working for about an hour or two before you can go back at it. A way to avoid having to stop is to keep a couple or three pipes in progress at once, in different stages of production. This way when one has glu...

For what it's worth, last weekend I was watching a leatherworker demonstrate his craft. He uses the Fiebings alcohol dyes, but adds one teaspoon of olive oil to the 4oz bottle of stain to thicken it and help with even application. He said that's the only difference between the oil dyes and the regu...

That's strange...I've never seen anything like that happen, but most of the plants I have are well past the seedling stage when I start giving them Miracle Grow. That's good to know, though, as I plan on putting in a bit of 'baccy next year.
