Drilling first and lathe shaping is, hands down the fastest way for me to make a pipe, allowing me to offer those pipes at inexpensive prices. Shaping first takes more time, so I have to charge more. the "ring" is only a light reflection... The border of the tobacco chamber is slightly rounded.

After the great photo-story from Kurth and Trever's advice I want to tell and show you, how I do my stemwork. Some words as introduction: I often see stems with convex or concave curves from sattle to bit. I think, and Rainer Barbi told me too, that is the wrong way! It needs a lot of time and often...
