For a measly $160 I'd be willing to bite on this.

Re: Floral leather carving...
I used to tool leather before I got into pipes. It was a money pit. Never made a return on my investment, but it was fun.
Looks like you did a great job on this, George.

Re: Pipe #23 - Rhodesian
Smooth finishing is tricky. Everyone has their tricks, tips, and super secret techniques. There is also a big difference between a "good" smooth finish, and an absolutely excellent finish, ie no color bleeding or microtexture and a consistent shine. For beginners, I personally believe the ...

Re: Pipe #23 - Rhodesian
Your finish is inconsistent, especially around the rim. That probably means you didn't sand enough. Get all the tear out from the lathe and make sure you raise the grain between grits.

Re: Pricing repair work
In my experience, the price pipe users are willing to pay does not often match the price we need to charge to make it worth our time. The old timey pipe repair guys had special machines designed to do the work. Tim West can put a new tenon in a stem in about 10 minutes. It's not perfect, but most gu...

Walt, you always come up with the most creative jigs and methods to solve your problems. Highly entertaining. I probably would have just thrown up my hands in surrender and ordered more equipment.

Yup. Patent Tanshells are super rare. The grain pattern on that pipe is pretty neat too. Excellent work as always, George.

Re: Pipe #20 - Saddle Bit Billiard
I'd call this close to an apple rather than a billiard. The ratio of maximum width versus bowl height is off. Here's some quick observations: -the back side of the bowl needs "tucked" in a bit more. -once you handle the previous step, the cheeks will be a bit heavy and need adjusting -bott...

Re: Copying a MOLDED stem by hand
Ooh! Now I want one... I've got a couple p-lips that I don't love.... Is it possible to alter a p-lip into a serviceable fishtail? Is there enough material there? Sent from my bloopty-bloop using hooty-hoo. I've seen it done, and done well. The more material you have the better, but since most mode...

It would be quite the honor to be able to learn even a small amount in an artisan's shop! Thank you. I'll keep going and trying to master these classics with everyone's help. I know how much sound advice is worth. And when you guys take the time out of your day to write responses, I feel like it is...

Re: Number Two
Great job, Quinton and George! Is this the beginning of a habit?
Bowls with rims that are not perpendicular to the chamber axis always look a bit odd to me on English pipes, but that's an aesthetic preference.
Who's idea was the stem inlay? Does it mean anything or is it just cool looking?

Re: Name that stain?
It's almost impossible to say from pictures. Assuming the color representation transmitted through all the technological bits is accurate, I'd say a mix of oxblood and burgundy. Red and burgundy might also work. Cordovan and mahogany are definitely not right.

It takes a lot of guts to even attempt that kind of repair. It takes a lot more skill to actually pull it off!

Re: a classic
The little accident on the lathe made me flinch!
It's always fun to see how other folks make pipes. Keep up the good work.
