http://onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?id=216&step=2 That's where I get most metals/plastics that I need. "Plastic Acetal" is delrin. For shorter pieces (2' and shorter), shipping isn't too bad at all. Remember - they can pack a lot of metal/plastic into a shipping container. Order a dec...

For me, I actually want the shorter bed - I need it to be small and portable, and the extra weight isn't worth it to me for what I do on it.

If I need to do a bigger project, I'll put it on a Bridgeport lathe!

I've made one out of oak, to see if I liked making pipes. I do, but I've yet to get around to buying briar!

As a starter, clean ALL of the cosmoline (red goo) off and re-oil with a thin coating of gun oil, preferably Breakfree CLP.

The cleaning needs to include removing the chuck and gears and cleaning all of them - be sure you can put them back before removing them, the chuck is tricky.

Re: location - yes I am, in Enfield. I'm modifying it because I dislike chatter of any kind, which it has (not much, but quite noticible to me, as I normally use a 2x10 FOOT lathe). Also, I want a quick change toolpost, camlock tailstock, DROs, etc. Probably going to end up putting another $4-500 in...

Good choice on lathe - I have the Cummins mini-lathe, but I'll be making it into something similar to the Micro-Mark.

Seems to me that Pimo and Tinsky have the higher prices, with the Emporium being the best. I may just order $100 worth to get the better prices overall.

Unwanted "trash" wood?

Does anyone with a kind, giving soul have any wood that is of no use to them? Briar, walnut, cherry, whatever. Just scraps at least 1" cube and up are what I'm looking for - but only if it's truly trash to you. I've hand carved a oak pipe, I think I've caught the bug. I don't want to go ahead a...

Perhaps I missed them, but I saw cigars, cigarets, pouches of tobacco for pipes, even rolling machines, but not one pipe. I'll call and ask today.

I hadn't thought of that! Good idea, thank you.

Any ideas on where I could get longer pieces? I'm looking to make a churchwarden in the near future and I'd rather not order online.

My personal favorite...

...is MacBaren's Black Ambrosia, currently. It makes for a nice relaxing smoke on the back porch watching the stars. As an added bonus, my wife loves the smell of it.

Zero tongue bite, which is much better than the others I've tried.

What's your favorite?

Corn cob pipes?

I just moved recently (two months ago) and unpacked my pipe for a smoke. I've only smoked cheap corn cob pipes before, and I'm looking for a few more. I can't find any at the tobacconist here in town, nor at either of the pharmacies. Where else can I look to buy them? I'm a bit hesitant to buy anyth...

Stores to look in for lucite, acrylic, etc.?

I live in Enfield, CT, and am looking for local places to get plastic rods to use for pipe stems. I've checked the phone book, and there are plenty of plastic places around, but the only place I've found thus far that sells plastic rods is about 40 miles away. Any ideas on what kinds of stores to lo...

That is simply magnificent!!

I agree with Nick, if you don't already mark your work, start doing so.

There's nothing more frustrating than a beautiful piece of art, whether it's a pipe or a painting, without a maker's mark.
