Thanks for the advice guys. I snipped a Sherline Lathe off eBay tonight... Should have it in about a week or so. Maybe sometime this summer I can swing the South Bend. I found a guy with an older 9" - long bed with just a 3 jaw chuck asking $600 firm. Another guys has a 13" regular bed wit...

Thanks John... After reading your post and thinking.... I was not considering what I needed to get the tenon cut precisely. I should have thought a bit more before posting. I'm trying to snipe a good Taig or Sherline from eBay... I let some go by because they were going too high - they were getting ...

Hi John... So you are the briar block inspection / risk management dept... I tried to send in a block, but it was returned - undelivered. They couldn't find you. :P  Seriously... I'd could be interested in trading some for stem rod, or ivory, nice shank extension wood, or pipe making tools I d...

How many pipes?...

How many pipes did you make before you began selling them, or thought that they were decent enough to sell? How did you go about beginning to sell your pipes? What would you have done differently going from a hobby to sideline or full-time professional? I have made to pipes so far, so I am no expert...

What about a "mini pen lathe"?

Has anyone used a "mini pen lathe" for stem turning? I know Jet makes one... It's a really small lathe made for hobby pen turners to turn their wood blanks on. I have seen them for around $130 new. * Features 1/12 HP, 60 watt motor * Center-tension drive pulley and grooved belt design tran...

I went ahead and got the carver from Harbor Freight. They have always been fine for me... They process the orders a bit slowly and will usually have something on backorder. On the carver... I may need to get a different shaft, but that's fine - I'll probably end out getting another Dremel or Foredom...

Jeff, I have made one pipe from an un-drilled block that I have fitted a stem to. I am looking for a Taig or Sherline lathe, but don't have one yet. So, the only method I had to use besdies hand sanding was my Delta belt / disc sander. I used the belt sander to try as best as I could reduce the teno...

I've been looking for a good deal on a Taig or Sherline. I'm leaning toward the sherline because they have a longer bed as an option (I have really long churchwarden stems in mind) and they seem to have more attachments / accessories. I'd be interested in a milling attachment for a non-pipe project ...

Sanding Materials

Hi folks. I appreciate the pipe makers contributing here. Short Intro: I have finished one pipe and almost finished a second, and may start cutting out some other shapes. I had been collecting equipment and materials for some time, posted a few questions on the Knox board, then decided I was not goi...

Hi Guys, I thought about getting one of these, but not sure if it would fit on the Dremel flex shaft. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=42614 I also had a link to someone selling different shaped chisel bits for these types of carvers. They seemed to be at an affordabl...
