Re: Second Pipe

I spent half a day down Charl's way and while I was there did a touch of carving myself.

I actually purchased one of your pipes off e-bay. It was a stacked poker. It smokes quite well, though I do wish the stem was longer.

Re: Busted Lucite tenon

You can extract that tenon with a wood screw extractor, but you have to be VERY careful. I find an extractor that is just a little larger then the draft hole. Then gently hand screw the extractor into the tenon. Not too far so you don't crack the shank. Once the extractor is in I like to put it in ...

Re: Pipemakers, craftsmen? Artists? Engineers? Bodgers?

It all depends on what kind of pipes you make. To be an artist you first have to learn techniques and then impart creativity and originality in to what you make. Art or craft, both noble and worthy pursuits. It is just a matter of which you want to be. If the pipes you make are faithful versions of...

There are two holes if you look in the mortise; one further towards the front and one further towards the back. I must have subconsciously disregarded the airway to the chamber. Chris is right. Since this is a cavalier, there's a much easier way to drill it and it will save you pain in the future w...

Re: Penzance and other Esoterica blends available today

Don't see any penzance. Bought 8 oz of the Blackpool and liked the flavor but after a week or so white streaks appeared. Have never been able to ascertain if it was mold or bloom. Never have bought esoterica again though I have a pound of so penzance jarred. Hope that doesn't mold! It looks like it...

Re: The whole stem thickness thing

We're not making cars or stereos. This isn't that hard. Actually, it is. That's why there are only a few hundred first rate stem makers on the planet, out of 7.1 billion people. Hell, go to any pipe show and looks at what's on the tables, or read the archives of PF. Making good stems drives people ...

Am about to go into doing stems and this is a fantastic tutorial. I have an old craftsman belt sander which I am going to use. Should be interesting, to say the least. I suspect Vermont Freehand will be getting a bit more business from me re: rod stock!

How completely strange, and dangerous! Of course, I guess that as all parts of the lathe are fixed and moving at the same time, in the same way it will drill straight, but still weird and, as noted, almost makes you cringe!

You got a good deal there. No kidding. I've got a Clear FFF (yup, 3 Fs) listed right now. I sure hope it goes for more than that! :? I've owned a few Radices and they're totally fine. I don't think their stems are very comfortable and they've all had gurgling issues. However, they've all delivered ...

Re: Installing Stem?

Pipe smoking is a wonderful way to let your mind unwind. Carving pipes is fun, addictive and, for me, got me into all sorts of woodworking. I started carving as a way to reduce my pipe purchases, now I do it for the absolute fun. Unfortunately I still buy pipes and so all I did was increase my costs...

I was working on a big, Cherrywood Dublin. It was really going GREAT, and then the same thing happened to me. As it was cherry, I trashed it but the hours gone!

Maybe I should have kept it, but given my lack of talent I have plenty of "shop" pipes now!

Thanks for all of the great replies! I did do a little searching on craigslist and found this for $2900 OBO. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/atl/wan/4233338231.html I'll definitely watch the videos and read all that was recommended. I want to buy once, I don't want to end up having to buy bigger down...
