I don't know a single cigarette smoker who can go all day or weekend without smoking. I do that often. I even use nasal snuff fairly regular and still have no problems going without for days if needed. There has to be something else to the cigarettes that causes such a strong dependence.

I will also echo Skips comments. I find that shaping then drilling has considerably cut my total time spent making a pipe.

I know for a fact Alex Florov drills prior to shaping, and I believe Jody Davis and Brian Ruthenburg do as well. So, I defy anyone on this board to claim any sort of elitism over them. Those who drill first and then shape are in very good company :P Alex Florov: http://www.florovpipes.net/PIPE-BIG-i...

Although bees wax certainly does work. I think carnauba is less visible on the tenon. I have used it to stops squeeks. I seems to be more durable too.

A sticky thread deticated to work shop pics might be cool. Kurt, I once saw a pic of a guy who got some flooring they use in computer labs. It is a raised floor of sorts. He ran the duct for his dust collector in it and had it all coming from the floor. I always thought that was a slick idea. Seeing...

Well, see, sometimes it's the simplest things! When I'd tried scraping before, I was always naturally assuming it was scraping like whittling; that is to say, with the edge at an angle. Holding it perpendicular works great. I just finished my first scraped stem and it came out quite well. Very hand...

I use what is called a "chip knife" but you could make a suitable knife out of a file for that ever popular "prison shank" look.

Letter E is what I use:

Just bring the drill bit up slowly to the end of the mortise and let it create the groove. I usually move it in and out until the bit it settled. Then I continue to drill the airway as normal. You end up with a scallop at the end of the mortise however that is not uncommon.

I had been thinking of using the first method also, but I heard that if your stem has a delrin tenon on it, then this delrin to delrin mortise and tenon idea was not a good one for some reason. I can't remember. Am I correct, or am I missing something here? It was me that told you that. I made one ...

I have a 3/8" standard drill bit that was ground to a chamberesque profile the same whay pierredekat describes. I use it when drilling freehand after shaping. I don't see why someone could not modify a silver and deming drill bit the same way. It might be easier than a spade bit as there would...
