I wonder how difficult it would be to drill the chamber with a standard twist drill and then adjust the taper on the lathe with a small bowl gouge?

Since they are turned out of wood, is there a foam or cloth padding that is placed under the paper?

And is the paper then just tacked or stapled to the back directly into the wood?

I certainly intend to. I have been keeping an eye out for a good deal on rod. Right now I use Guiduci Vulcanite molded stems that have enough material to them that I can alter then quite a bit with a lot of hand shaping.

I use a lathe to drill with just for the reason you stated, it limits the tools I have to use. However, I can see how a drill press with a self centering vice might be a little easier to deal with. I would think that would be the case if you were mainly doing non-traditional, freehand shapes. That w...

I tell you Tyler, the heart will begin a racin' when you see that block start up at 3900 rpm and think about putting a tool to it! Scared the heck out of me when I did it the first time and every tool on my bench looked as if it has come alive and was running for its life lol. I have only dabbled wi...

Yeah she's a cutie alright. She just turned 4 years old. I have recently replaced that picture with some conceptual drawings of pipes. She noticed and started to whine "Awwwwww where is my picture??????" I told her it was still in the shop but just moved but she insists that it be in that ...

I wondered if those at West's site were that type of disk. You are right, they are very expensive. I think I will try your method Tyler with the various rpm. I bet it would be faster if nothing else. I also use my disk sander on my lathe. I find it to be better to stand to the side of the disk rathe...

How interesting, I have kind of gone backwards. I had never used any files really until recently. I used to do 75% of it on the disk but now I generally don't go beyond 80 grit sandpaper on the sanding disk and then to go files and then hand sanding. It's interesting how people work differently at t...

Shaping with a File or Rasp

I have been using a lot more file and rasp work on my latest pipes. I find that by doing that by hand I can get a better feel for the form and more control. It takes a little longer but I make fewer mistakes that I later have to correct. How much file work do you guys use compared to the disk sander...

A little ghosty spirit came to me in the night and said " Joooooohn, noooobody buys paintings.... caaaaarve pipes boy...caaaarve pipes" Well not really but... I have been an artist for about 10 years and a pipe smoker for 3 of them. I had thought about making a pipe for some time but never...

hey tony, I am using Frontpage to update and build my site. Whenever I try to cut and paste the code for the Pipe Smoking Ring into a page it appears with some strange letters and symbols replacing the '<' or '>' symbols at the end of each line of code. Is there a way to prevent that from happening?...

What a great Article you have.....

....on the front page of your site. You should keep that up there as long as the link remain active. I think I will put it on my site as well. The more this kind of thing gets out there the better.

Take Care and congrats on the site reconstruction
