Kurt, we've never met, but are you saying you're fat, ugly and a dumb ass?

Acetone and Ping Pong Balls

I tried Pentacryl but I should have read the bottle first as it is for green/wet wood and then I tried wood juice. I can't really say the wood juice did anything at all. Wood seemed the same after soaking as before. Having flushed a few bucks down the drain I moved on. Nitrocellulous Laquer, seems i...

Re: Pinging Todd. How the heck?

Thanks Todd. Reminds me of the magician that won't reveal how a trick is done because once revealed the magic is gone and the person's amazement is replaced with disappointment. I like magic, being amazed and take solace in the fact that I am not crazy, well not much anyway.

Pinging Todd. How the heck?

http://lh6.ggpht.com/_l5l8pgp-uAw/Sa64N96Id_I/AAAAAAAAApk/jTgfMCwFQh0/s640/100_5196.JPG I was cruising through your blog and of course this pipe came out fantastic. However, I am absolutely stumped as to how in the heck you drilled this. To me I see the bottom of the mortise being drilled well belo...

Re: FUBAR after head and bend

Fat stems are doable with a heat gun but are a bit of a problem. Never tried one in the oven because I epoxy a delrin tenon on most and thought the heat would break the epoxy down. Are any using delrin or are these turned tenons?

http://s186.photobucket.com/albums/x313/ckrpipes/2009/No-049/No049-02.jpg This is a Fiebings black dye which I have tried a couple of times at various levels of failure. This one I sanded to 2000 as I planned on skipping the green trip buff as I feel it is what takes off too much. On this one I hea...

Re: Ebauchon vs Plateaux?

it can throw off the shape real easy.
That is why I have to come up with all these new shapes, last week I did a blow snail pot. A very, very intricate shape I must say.

Re: Ebauchon vs Plateaux?

Toss them on the coals and put on the burgers and don't forget the beer. I do soak them. I feel the density of an Ebauchon if cut from the center of the burl is denser than the Plateaux. Many of the Ebauchons I receive are cross cuts from the plateaux part of the burl. For the money I think they are...

Try the masks as they are cheaper, your nose will let you know. Pick, roll and flick it, if you can kill a squirrel at 20 yards then spend more and get the filtered one.

Re: Second pipe "Billiard...?"

Over all I think it shows a good effort. You have learned much and are applying it well but you still have more ahead of you. .02 FWIW: The bowl really looks to be too "tooled". There is no curve or flow some tapering outward and inward towards the rim is needed, in fact the back side look...

To the best of my knowledge briar is only about 1100 on the janka scale. In comparison to other woods it is not really that hard. I have made pipes from: Mesquite 2345 Locust 1700 Rosewood 1780 Osage Orange 2040 These woods are all much harder than briar. I have never had one burn out but that is be...

Re: Help! Stem has a gap:-(

Take a two inch square of 220 sand paper, cut a hole in it the same size as the tenon. Insert stem with tenon through the hole and paper facing shank. Press together tight but not so tight to rip the sand paper. Support pipe somehow and grab corners of sand paper and rotate it a couple of times. Pre...

Re: Finishing stem and shank faces

About the same as Nick. Once it is faced I sand with 400 and 600 and then move to compounds with a piece of cut tee shirt. Always sand a bit heavier in the center and work out a bit lighter, it will be slightly concave although you won't be able to notice it. It is all done before drilling or turnin...

Norton is decent and I find it available in Home Depot up to 220. The rest I get from Woodcraft, don't remember the brand but it is also decent. The most memorable mistake I made was picking up about 5 variety packs at a local hardware store where the adhesive sucked. I would cut a strip and go to s...

For me it would work only as a hanger on 22-27.

As a clencher I think it would be like looking down the barrel of a cannon when the bit is sitting on 19/20 or the other side.
