Re: Cavendish Pics...
What strain of tobacco is that? I grew a few plants of some cherry red Virginia this past summer. It was my second attempt at growing tobacco. After curing I just rolled the leaves up real tight and packed them into mason jars, and vacum sealed. I smoke it straight and it's quite good. I have one un...

Re: Possible shaping "tool"
I've recently discovered the usefullness of taking pictures at the point where I think I'm done shaping. Seems my camera has a better eye than I do.

Proper taper
Working on a Dublin churchwarden. Still have a little tweaking to do on the stummel, but I wanted to ask about the stem before I went any further. Should I start the taper at the stem shank junction, or wait until after the inlay rings? My first instinct is that it would look a bit weird with the ri...

Re: Achieving round stummels without a lathe
When I first got the PIMO book, I did try the hole saw method on my drill press. Does it work to achieve a perfectly cylindrical bowl? Yes. But you still have to shape the bottom half of the bowl or so. But the way I see it, a lot of us use a lathe to achieve symetry in the bowl and many other parts...

I vote either billiard or churchwarden. I've never made a billiard, and my churchwarden stems could use some more practice. Or we could combine both and do a Bing! ![Two Thumbs Up ](./images/smilies/2thumbs.gif)

Re: Dust Collection Vs. Dust Expulsion
My shop space is tiny, like 8'x6'. So I make due with a barrel fan pointing out the door, set up right next to the lathe, as I use it for nearly everything including mounting a sanding disk to it. Someday I'll have a real shop!

Re: Ernie's Shrine of Pipe Perfection
As I mentioned before, we cannot judge a pipe by the intentions behind it. If we did, then every newbie pipe on this forum would sell for what a Former/Toku/TJ pipe (or whatever pipe they were trying to emulate) went for because it was their INTENTION to make that pipe. Does that mean I CAN'T bejew...

Re: First Curchwarden
The bend in the stem is a bit abrupt. I think it would flow better if it were more gradual. When I did my first churchwarden stem, I looked for as many pictures of churchwardens that I could find and found the best bend radius that I thought would work with my pipe and tried to copy that.

Re: Ernie's Shrine of Pipe Perfection
Agree with everyone else that this is very helpful and a great idea. Just one question though. If this is going to be an ongoing thing, will it continue to be here in the gallery section, or would it help to put it all in it's own section for ease of reference. That way these critiques won't get los...

Re: What is the purpose of PMF?
I don't think anyone here is too busy to take an interest in the new guy. Like I mention earlier in this thread, I have never been turned down when seeking help or information. On the contrary, I have only been met with generosity and guidance.

Re: What is the purpose of PMF?
Though pmf doesn't have a formal sample project, the established guys here can tell who is a hobbyist and who wants to peruse the art based on the first pipe they post and will act accordingly. I think this forum does have a form of a sample project. The PITH that is done every year is an awesome o...

Re: First pipe - looking for critques
Here goes (I feel like an ant among giants here, but whatever). I agree with Yak's statement that it takes coaching, and for those that are serious about progressing, coaching yields results, and is pretty much a necessity on some level, if you wish to reach a certain height. However, pardon my newb...

Not bad at all for your first pipe. Much better than my first. Listen to what these more experienced guys are saying and you'll be making some great pipes in no time.
