Re: JSEC - Quail Egg -- mine

Nice job James. It does look very light. Is there a benefit to using a metal tenon, is it just something different? My next 3 are already spoken for by some friends of mine, but after those, I also plan on spending some time on finally making another one for myself. It's the main reason I got into t...

Re: Magnum Squashed Tomato

I really like this one. Very nice job Brian. As a noob, there are certain pipes on here from time to time that catch my eye and that I find myself studying intently, with the intention of really learning and gleaning inspiration from. This is definitely one of them.

Welcome! And I will also just echo what wmolaw said. It's very addicting, but even more rewarding.

Re: Smoking?

Had my second serving of McB's Plumbcake today. Packed it alot looser, and it made a huge difference. Much more enjoyable, burned perfectly all the way to the bottom with negligible dottle. Methinks I'll make room for it in my rotation, which means I'll have to acquire another pipe soon. Darn.

Re: Smoking?

Just smoked my first bowl of Macbaren Plumcake. I liked the flavor, but I had a bit of trouble keeping it lit. I think its tempermental in the way it likes to be packed, not too tight, and requires you to sip it slow and steady.

Just watched a red sun rise over the sea, from the smoke deck of the mighty Coast Guard Cutter Legare while enjoying a mellow smoke of Dunhill Early Morning Pipe from my Nording churchwarden.

Re: laying out a billiard

Having the fattest part of the bowl well below center is probably the biggest nono, and the shaping on the bottom part of the bowl, the real round, smooth curve flowing into the shank is hard to do. Terrifying for a new maker. "Gonna hit the chamber. Gonna hit the chamber." Thank you Sas,...

Just out of curiosity, what are a few of the most common rookie mistakes on a billiard? I ask just so that I, and other rookies may try to avoid them when we do attempt a billiard.

Re: fifth pipe

Thanks Hudson. I think you might be on to something with the smooth briar at the base idea. I'll experiment with that in the future.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I appreciate all the input

Re: Hello from another new member

Thank you Sasquatch. You verbalized (or typed) what I was thinking much better than I did. I actually had James Gilliam stop by my place recently when he was in town a few weeks back and I had him critique one of the pipes I was working on. I was pretty nervous at first, but afterwords I am very gla...

Both front and back of the pipe has nice flow, althought it's a bit tall.

Nice grain and stem tapering, I would love to see some tapering to the shank, too.

Michail
Noob question. Are billiards supposed to have a tapered shank?

Re: #1218 and #1219

It may just be the lighting/reflection or angle, but on the first pipe it looks like the top of the saddle starts to taper a bit. Aside from that I think you've done a bang up job  . I really like the birdseye on both pipes.

This is actually a happy coincidence for me that you brought this up Andrew. I was actually just starting to draw up my first attempt at a horn and was considering some of the same questions.
Thank you for the example David.
