Are you talking about silver bands for silver inlay?

If its silver bands then you need to buy silver sheet, avaialble in many thicknesses and then you need to cut, solder and make it into a ring using a ring madrel to get it perfectly round. Its not an easy job.

Re: Aluminum Tubing for bamboo install!

What are the thoughts on using aluminum tubing for connecting bamboo to the shank? I've used delrin and it works, but you really have to scort it, plus I found some tubing really cheap, but I worry about moisture causing corrosion to the aluminum. Any other thoughts on using it? Moisture certainly ...

I use a 2 flute ball nose end mill. Even with the 2 flutes it gets choked with chips pretty quickly, by their nature there is little room for them, in some ways this is good as it means the bit is very sturdy and wont flex at all. As long as you remove and clear frequently i find it to be a an excel...

I had no problem using this method after sanding to a high grit, in fact i hit 1000 before i used the tannin/ferric acetate. Here is how mine turned out, with a yellow over stain to give an eltang style golden contrast. Sorry for the crappy photography, im still learning. http://www.askwithpipes.com...

A drill press is a great tool, i use mine for many jobs that an ordinary hand drill just cant handle, in fact you can even do some basic milling in a drill press if you get a cross slide. However one thing that my drill press does not get used for is pipe making, thats the job of the lathe.

Kendall, were you able to get the fill to stain properly?
I ver much doubt it. You would need to stain the dust before mixing with the glue.

I know its been mentioned here before, but make sure you get a good quality forstner bit. I thought mine was good quality until i tried a face a shank with it, and it was cupped badly! Its not to bad if you have a metal lathe, as i use the forstner to round out the shank and remove excess material q...

Speaking as a fellow hobbyist this is my view. As you say, pipemaking is an expensive hobby, its a pretty specialist area that requires sometimes unique tooling so therefore unlike similar wood based hobbies, such as pen turning for example, there isnt a cheap way to go about it. For those who just ...

Yep, this was when i got the colour, but very little.

More experimentation needed with varying concentrations i think.

Well, there's not a whole lot to tell. I mixed up a solution of tannin, and started applying it to the wood. I used the old folded over pipe cleaner applicator. So did you just make up a saturated solution of the tannin and it turned the wood black? What about the vinegar, where does that part come...

Help with Sanding motor

Hi Guys, im looking for some advice. For shaping and sanding pipes id like to get a motor that runs forward and reverse, and has an easy to use speed control, ideally from 0-1425rpm. Firstly, is this a possible arrangement and secondly where might i get one without breaking the bank? Cheers for any ...
