Re: Fine Pipes Halcyon and Paragon Wax is no more

Carnauba wax for smooth pipes and any good microcrystalline paste wax for rough finishes. I prefer renaissance wax or a similar product.

Re: Accent rings - glued on temporarily?

You use a couple of tiny dots of CA applied with a toothpick, then you can break it off.

Re: Which Sand paper is best?

A latecomer, as always in this forum… 😃 I like mirka abrasives, their whole range is pretty good. Which type/line of Mirka do you use? The WPF? Gold? Also for wetsanding? Depends what is available. It's all good quality so I don't think it will make a huge difference which specific range you choose...

dogcatcher wrote: Sun Feb 18, 2024 12:32 am I used klingspor for years. I order online because their shipping cost are real fair. Quick service and everything sanding you can think of. They also carry a lot of other stuff I use.
Don't know if it's the same stuff but Klingspor in the UK has been very poor quality in my experience.

Re: Working with ivory/mammoth

Sand a flat area, then glue it to a piece of scrap in your lathe chuck. You can now turn it or drill it (gently) as needed.

Re: Lathe axis concentricity problem

If your tailstock and headstock are aligned properly as they appear to be in the last picture then your block is simply not correctly aligned in the jaws. You are using a chuck with pins, so just rotate the block slightly.

Re: Falcon Pipe Thread dies

Ok, i'd be interested to see when you do. I have threaded briar for some projects and found the results to be rather rough with the briar tending to "chip out". Falcon threads appear to be milled rather than cut to avoid this.

Have you got a picture of the threads the die makes on briar?

Re: Process Shots, Boring Pipe

Yes to all that. I drill in with the tapered bit some certain unspecified amount that is less than "Oh shit that's too far" (having some rough idea what I'm making, be it a lovat or whatever). Then I choose the actual stem length visually, with the thing actually sitting stuck in the stum...

I don't agree with Bighornbriar, the shorter airway makes no difference to how hot the pipe smokes, old urban myth of pipemaking.

Re: Internal shank repair

I took on a repair job recently for a customer, I normally refuse all repair work (on pipes I didn't make), partly because it's badly paid annoying work and of course the issues with payment, postage etc. Because he is a local guy and very persuasive I caved and said yes, of course I soon wished I h...

Re: Compressor and cabinet

That compressor is about twice the size of mine. At that kind of size you are probably wasting money, there is a limit to how much air you can get through a sandblasting gun and the tubes leading to it, my gun runs on 1/4" hose, at 90 psi it's maximum CFM is only slightly higher than my compres...
