A latecomer, as always in this forum… 😃 I like mirka abrasives, their whole range is pretty good. Which type/line of Mirka do you use? The WPF? Gold? Also for wetsanding? Depends what is available. It's all good quality so I don't think it will make a huge difference which specific range you choose...

Don't know if it's the same stuff but Klingspor in the UK has been very poor quality in my experience.

Never got on with a French wheel myself.

Sand a flat area, then glue it to a piece of scrap in your lathe chuck. You can now turn it or drill it (gently) as needed.

If your tailstock and headstock are aligned properly as they appear to be in the last picture then your block is simply not correctly aligned in the jaws. You are using a chuck with pins, so just rotate the block slightly.

Ok, i'd be interested to see when you do. I have threaded briar for some projects and found the results to be rather rough with the briar tending to "chip out". Falcon threads appear to be milled rather than cut to avoid this.

Have you got a picture of the threads the die makes on briar?

Yes to all that. I drill in with the tapered bit some certain unspecified amount that is less than "Oh shit that's too far" (having some rough idea what I'm making, be it a lovat or whatever). Then I choose the actual stem length visually, with the thing actually sitting stuck in the stum...
