Re: Chamber shaping by hand

I will keep you all updated.. I ordered the briar for this and will be beginning soonly. I doubt I will be done with it anytime in the near future (moving, starting new job, etc) but I will try to document it as well as I can.. Any tips on photographing the process and finished pipes? My wife did ju...

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade

First, I want to say that you all are awesome pipe carvers! Seriously, I am jealous and working to better myself at this craft. Second, I can't believe I missed this one! :banghead: We should make an email list for 2013/14 PITH.. I surely want in, and by then I should have a few more pipes under my ...

Re: Chamber shaping by hand

I know you all think I'm crazy, but I have been around these forums enough to know that most of ya'll are crazy too. So when I see posts on here or votes that I'm a fool, I actually laugh out loud because it is foolish but, who knows. Gotta try. And I'll take pictures. And then you can probably all ...

Re: Chamber shaping by hand

In response to everyone. I know I thought all of this was what you would say, hahaha :) But it came to me in a dream and I figured even if I just smoked it once and then shelved it, I would be a cool piece. I know I know, more than anything pipes are made to be smoked even though everyone is such a ...

Chamber shaping by hand

This is probably a really dumb question... Is is possible to shape the chamber by hand? (first) If so does anyone actually do this since drilling a beautiful chamber is so much easier/faster? (second) Is it completely ridiculous to rusticate the inside of the chamber? I know it is standard to have a...

Re: First pipe, bent poker

Ya I had some trouble with the lines. I was hand sanding (no sanding wheels here yet) and I just could not seem to get them straight. The bottom of the bow on the back side is actually in a bit compared to the part above the shank, and that bugs me the most and i kept trying to get it not be bowed b...

First pipe, bent poker

OK OK. Everyone already knows the procedure, and I have already looked at this and picked it apart, but I wanted to hear what you guys say so I can get some good feedback and move on to making some more/better pipes. I will say it's made from a Tinsky kit. Ok grain, not stained, sanded to 600, 85% w...

Poly/oil or oil/wax finish?

Another newbie question. I just refinished an old baby grand piano and have some Sam Maloof's Poly/Oil and Oil/Wax finishes.. would either of those be good/bad/ehh on briar for a simple finish? http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=2004 I know the Oil/Wax says that it isn't preferred when being ex...

Re: New here, question on 'baccy

Thanks all! Ya I am not necessarily looking for cigar in my pipe, but trying to move over and find what I like and not be too drastic.. or maybe I need to just make the jump with both feet. Like I said I do really enjoy this Davidoff Flake but it is all I have had. I am not a newb to smoking tobacco...

I have wanted a Duke or Don since I started looking at pipes, so if you need someone to test for you send one my way
Really great work though!

New here, question on 'baccy

So I am new around here, I am trying to scrape together the funds to start making some pipes of my own, but I bought a nice little pipe a few months ago and being a cigar smoker I picked up a tin of Davidoff Flake Medallions at the local tobacco shop(they're selection was horrible). My thing is I re...

Re: How much is too much

I opened this thread thinking it was about the cost of pipes, and quickly realized it is about quantity of pipes. :notworthy: And WOW you guys have a lot. I have one that I have been loving on but don't plan on it being that way for too long. Seems like we are reckoning 5-10 is a good number for the...
