Re: Another "My first pipe"...

My only thing by way of criticism would be to ask if you've waxed it or if you're going with an untreated finish. If you haven't waxed it, and it looks kind of matte from here, I'd say giving it some polish would really make it pop. But in general, well done. Thank you. Embarrassing as it is i must...

Re: Another "My first pipe"...

That pipe is probably "fixable" and if you tinker it a little bit, and it improves, you will be on the road to really understanding what makes a pipe smoke good. Yes, all pipes generate moisture - it is a product of combustion. The question is, how do you handle it? If you give the smoke ...

Re: Another "My first pipe"...

Thank you, Sasquatch! Got the briar on mail order from a company in Denmark (P.E. Hermann) and they seem to know what they are about… But I think your other guess is spot on. I probably should have taken more care with the ariflow design… I wasn’t awer that turbulence could force moisture (and appar...

Re: Another "My first pipe"...

Actually no, I have no idea what the yellow stuff is you are talking about. Could you elaborate? Well.. I find there is always some moisture in the pipe right after smoking (if that isn’t just something that happens to my pipes?). I’ve sort of supposed it’s a mix of oil from the tobacco and condens...

Re: Another "My first pipe"...

mathias65, I can only agree with you. A smooth transition between stummel and stem would be nice. Actually, the gap between them is my questionable way of dealing with the fact that I had trouble getting their shapes to mach… The idea was that the space between them should set them apart from each o...

Another "My first pipe"...

Here is my first attempt at a pipe (I'm disregarding an entirely failed experiment with a pre-drilled kit some years back), apart from a prefabricated stem it is made from scratch using a drill press and a dremel. I didn't do a lot of research about the does and don'ts beforehand (Typical me...) so ...

To give a bit of trans-atlantic perspective I might add that we've had a long row of tobacco tax raises in Sweden during the last two years or so. A packet of ciggarets have gone up from about 48 kroner to 50 kroner. In the same period a 50 gram tin of Petersen pipe tobacco has increased from 95 kro...

The CNC pipe, though, will suffer from the same problem as all machine-made pipes in that it will not interact with the grain. Perhaps the savings in time will make up for the waste in briar. I just make pipes for the joy of it (for now at least) so cost and effectiveness isn't really an issue (esp...

I think the programming, set-up time, and cost of running a machining center makes it cost ineffective. If I'd wanted to be cheap and effective I'd be a cigarette smoker... but actually the particular machine and software I was thinking of using is part of the machine-park in the workshop at my sch...

CNC-machines?

Dose anybody know if it is at all possible to use a CNC-machine (4-axis cnc mill to be precise) for the whole drilling and shaping process? Right of hand I can't think of any reasons why it should be impossible, but so far my experience in pipe making consists of making some half descent freehand ca...
