Re: Words to live by
A few times I've been called "Tyler"on the forum. Not sure how the confusion happened. He's much more charming than I. Maybe it's because your signature says "Tyler Beard" :D Ok, here's mine. " I don't think you're really that smart, you're just an over achiever". It p...

They made it quite clear that the stem has a white dot. That's got to be worth at least $1M.

Old treated railway ties. That's the ticket. The pipe should last 200 years.

Re: Drilling the airway correctly.
Make sure the bottom of the drill bit intersects the bottom of the bowl. The centerline of the drill bit will be slightly higher than the bottom of the bowl. One way is to actually put the drill bit on the block as stated and mark the center line of the drill bit then draw that line on the block. Th...

Sandcastle Pipes. It has a nice ring to it. Forget blasting. Sell pipes with sand pits as unique/special pipes. You can say the pits in your pipes were created using sand from Scotland combined with a proprietary process that took years to develop.

David, I listened to the show. Congrats! You did a great job and it made me go back to your site and check out your pipes again. You have some very nice pipes too. The Crescent Moon, Edwin’s Egg,and Comet are my personal favorites. How in the heck did you get that Askwith collaboration white? That's...

Anyone Interested in Doing a POY?
I know this is a sore spot for most but I'm a moderator on another forum and we're starting to explore makers for our 2015 POY. Deliveries would be in mid June 2015. Probably only 15-20 pipes. We're not looking for cheap pipes or a deal and know the drill. Anyone interested or just wanting more info...

How did you shape the part I have highlighted (whatever it's called)? By Hand? I've thought of trying it but assumed it would be too difficult to get it right at my skill level.

Re: Storign pipes hanging by stem
To minimize stem oxidation I store mine in a closed cabinet. It's really not good to leave them exposed to even ambient light. Does anyone disagree?

What I think makes a high grade pipe is near perfection in execution, superior finish and materials. To me, the stem is an extremely important element when classifying a pipe as high grade.

That there is a limit to how "open" a pipe should be and that 1/4" tenons work extremely well.

Re: Shellacing Problems
I don't use pipe cleaners anymore. A cheap medium size artists brush works real well for me. It eliminates any streaking or the lines made when using a pipe cleaner. I also use the brush for bowl coatings. It works great.
