Also make sure your shellac is good. Once in solution you have tops 6 months, dry flake a bit longer if stored in optimum conditions. Check out http://www.woodcentral.com/bparticles/shellac.shtml

I saw a pipe with a partially rusticated stem at the TAPS show this past weekend, I don't remeber the maker or much else except it caught my eye as a two-tone rustication then I picked it up and realized that it was part of the stem that was rusticated. I wasn't crazy about it, but I'm sure there ar...

Turning tennons on pre-formed stems
I searched and searched for an easy way to do this and couldn't find one here on the board, so I decided to drill it out to accomodate the Pimo tool (which I now hate as I have a metal lathe and can get way better tennons on it, as long as I can chuck the stem). As I was drilling (slowly by hand w/ ...

If your pulling the same amount of air and the bowl size is the same, the air would be moving at the same speed through the tobacco on top of the bowl, right? It may be flowing faster or slower in the airway, but the speed of airflow at the point where the tobac is burning should be the same, right....

OK, first tried turning by hand (as Rad suggested). This worked but was going very slowly. I held tight with my left had onto the pipe and turned the lathe on but had the clutch out (lowest RPM possible). I used my right hand to slowly lower the clutch and engage the lathe for brief intervals, got a...

It's making a bit more sense now. I could tell the little bits were at the ends of the alignment lines, just wasn't sure if there was any more to chuck with other than the hands. The whole reason I'm asking is because I used my pipemakers chuck (not sure of correct technical name, the one that is li...

Drilling after shaping
This question is mainly for Todd, but all answers are welcome. http://lh5.ggpht.com/_l5l8pgp-uAw/Sa64KAWa3kI/AAAAAAAAApU/O9LoL7hvB5U/s640/100_5193.JPG What are the little bits of wood for that are glued on? How do you hold the briar for drilling? (I'm assuming that the bit is spinning and the briar ...

I think the main reason not to use poly or lacquer is the heat issue. These coatings will crack and peel unless you use high-temp stuff. A high-temp baking enamel would probably hold up, but you'd have to apply it evenly then have to worry about runs, sags, solvent pop, etc. as it is baking, not to ...

Royal Cajun Dark & VA #1
MacBaren's Virginia Number 1 mixed one to one with McClelland's Royal Cajun Dark (by weight). I mixed this up almost a year ago and let it stew in a baby food jar (I experiment with very small amounts before I'll mix up a big batch so as to not waste the precious weed). Opened it last night and trie...

Actually the Delrin is cheaper if you order enough, there is the $20 line minimun, but once you buck the order up to 14 feet it comes up under $2 a foot, looked like the ABS was quite a bit more expensive. I am planning on making just the tennons from the Delrin and not the entire stems, it's quite ...

Is it really a question of if they smoke cooler (the smoke getting to your mouth is cooler) or is it more of can the briar radiate the heat well enough to not get damaged. Seems to me that the thick walled pipe would trap more of the heat in the briar (which it can damage, right?) rather than radiat...

JBW said Crazy idea #54637...... Looking at the photo of the jig, I was wondering if the desired profile of the stem were extended to the outside could you shape the entire stem and not just 2 flat sides? Not sure if this is clear or even makes sense. Thoughts?? How about if you had a bearing inside...
