Random, Any tips on the cutting and grinding the end? The end of the shank now is ground to have 4 edges (for the chuck to grasp and stabilize the bit) do you think I should cut it down and then grind the 4 edges the way it was originally? Or do you think it would be fine round (like any other drill...

Tobacco Hole bits

Hey Folks, My buddy John Crosby mentioned not too long ago about cutting down my Pimo Tobacco Hole Drill Bits... Any tips or advice on this? Can the end of the bit remain round, or should I grind it to have it squared like it comes from the factory? I am currently drilling with a drill press, and wh...

Random,

That's very trua about having multiple lighting... I have, as I mentioned, several spot lamps going on and with the shop lights taking care of the main work areas, the spots give me that little extra shine for checking the details more closely...

It's working out well...

I'll smoke a cob 80% of the time I'm in the workshop... you just can't beat 'em in the bang for the buck...

I bite down hard on my bits while I'm working, so that's my main reason, but they will always deliver in smoke quality...

Tyler, I think your dead on with that statement about the stem! I forget who said it (I think it was Jan Zeman) but it was something to the effect of, A perfectly drilled pipe will never smoke well if the stem/mortise engineering is not of the highest quality. Tyler Said: Here's an opinion to consid...

Marks, You hit that one... on the um.. mark... Fully agreed, I've refurbished probably 50 pipes, and I always ask the customer if they like how it smoked, does it get gurgles, Etc. so I've drilled out many a pipe... All the difference in the world, no doubt... I do however, believe that certain brai...

Lighting

 I just installed one of two 48 inch overhead lamps in the workshop today... I had been working with multiple spot lamps which weren't horrible, but man oh man, what a difference already... I can see everything without trying so hard... So I thought I'd mention that Sears has double bulb balis...

JMB,

Firstly, welcome!

Your correct that you don't want to smoke a pipe that has had any type of oil or toxic paint on them... very bad idea!

Yes John, that was my exact point... You can use a protective coating of many types (wax, lacquer, shellac, etc.) to protect Briar, without SEALING the wood from oxygen... as would happen if you dip the wood into a sealant. I still can't believe they still do that! There we go Ben, I think that cove...

Ben, I'm not saying it's carried to the outside, I'm saying that the air needs to get IN to dry the wood... if it's sealed, it won't do that... Picture a sponge dipped in white glue... when it dries, how much water will that sponge hold? Ultimately, when smoking a quality pipe, the briar is holding ...
