Thanks for all the great info. I have gone ahead and tried putting this thing together to see what happens. The pipe will probably look a bit funny (a bent brandy with a 2" stem extension?), but it was an interesting experiment! The epoxy has cured now, so I've gotta move on to the sanding stag...

Length of a tenon?

Just playing around here with another pipe, but I'm thinking of making a short shank extension from briar - just for the experience if nothing else. Anyway I'd like to take a small piece of briar left over from shaping a pipe and turn a tenon on one end to insert into the mortise on a pipe I'm makin...

I'm certainly no expert, but I'm guessing that you're right.

Or perhaps thay used the custom "bent drill" bit...

Since it's a filter pipe, perhaps there is a slight mortise cut into the end of the stem where it contacts the stummel, that would make sense.

The only pipe that I've seen with two draft holes in the stem comes from Radice (but I'm no expert on all the pipes being made!).

Just as a wild guess, I'd say that it might be a Radice second.

Thanks for the tip. I guess I just need to increase that angle a LOT, then sand down to make it correct. I've been using my Dremel in that area with both the half and quarter inch sanding drums, but by the time I get rid of my "cut" marks, it is indented too much! Perhaps I should pay more...

Bowl/shank junction tips?

I've only made 5 pipes, so I'm still in the rank beginner stage - but... The main problem that I've had with all 5 pipes has been the area where the shank meets the bowl - especially on the top portion. It seems that no matter how hard I try, when cutting the rough shape with my coping saw I always ...

I recall reading some page on pipe making tips dated a couple of years ago where the Pimo tool was said to be about $30. That sorta added to my shock when I saw it on their web page for over twice that. I used a blank stem as a test, and had a heck of a time getting the tool adjusted to the correct ...

Well, I just got my Pimo tenon turner yesterday, and I can see what you mean by "never change it"! I got about a dozen stems, and the air hole on all of them were far too tight for the guide pin. Once I enlarged the air hole, it took quite a few times to get the thing set "almost"...

I just kept seeing folks post photos of pipes they made, and decided to try it myself. I've been sanding, refinishing and working on the finish of cheap ebay pipes for about 5 years, so was getting pretty good at that part. What the heck, I had a dremel, buffing wheels, and a drill press. I picked u...

I have this "love/hate" relationship with bamboo. I have a bunch of it growing wild in my backyard, and every year it's a battle to get rid of it. Unfortunately it's not the kind I can use for pipes... I recently bought a Stanwell with a bamboo shank, and really like the pipe. Because of t...

I haven't found their stems (especially the ones in the kits) to be fragile at all. Just the opposite - they have a large tenon, and a lot of extra material in the stem. I'm on my 4th Pimo kit, and if anything find their stems to be too bulky. Luckily that gives me plenty of room for additional tape...

Thanks for the good tips! That's the sort of info I was wondering about. Regarding Ultem, I'm sure that it's strength would make it perfect for a churchwarden. I've cruised your web site, and am very impressed with your use of Ultem in your pipes! However -- considering that I'm a total newbie, with...

Churchwardens?

I don't know if this topic fits here or not, but I'll post it and find out... I noticed that Pimo carries a churchwarden stem, so I ordered a couple of them when I ordered the tenon turner and a selection of stems. The stem is (according to their site) 7/16 x 8. I am going to try to make myself a sm...

While I am totally inexperienced in this, I find that using strips of sandpaper very useful for those round parts that I can get to - especially the and upper portion of the bowl. I too can 'feel' imperfections with my fingers even when they're not readily visible. While I do most of the sanding wit...

That's a GREAT help, and was what I was wanting to hear. I have no plans to ever sell any pipes, so just can't justify the lathe (although I'm drooling over the Taig!)

I just ordered the tenor turner and a bunch of stems from Pimo, so I'm taking the next step!

Thanks Jeff!

Thanks again for the videos!

Thanks once again for the great videos! I have watched all of them several times, learning a bit more with each viewing. Last night I found a whole new use. I was following links to the Taig website, and reading about their micro lathe and found it a very interesting item (especially for the price)....
