Great job!

I turned the tamper on my new toy - a Taig lathe, then shaped the "spoon" on a sanding drum. The tamper and pipe came from the same piece of briar. That chunk of mesquite was in my BBQ bag - so I saved it from an untimely death by using the sanding drum to cut out a pipe rest. Oh, the pipe...

Beautiful! I love bamboo on pipes, and those look great!

(the site is running beautifully also, thanks for all your hard work)

Burnt carcas is probably right - it's a smell which is like nothing else, and one you'll likely never forget. I made a couple of tampers out of the the "tips" on the antlers a few years back. Almost made me projectile vomit! I'm making a pipe with a short extension now, but if I go real sl...

Yep, that's what antlers smell like! Doesn't have to be "fresh" either -- I'm using a pair from a deer my father got 30 years ago, and it still has that unforgettable smell. The smell, and the fact that it's hard to find a straight section, makes me lean more toward Corian or something for...

Well, it certainly sounds different! I can't wait to see the photos of the Frankenpipe.

What the heck, experimentation is half the fun!

Great work!

Alternative stem inlay materials

I've made two pipes with shank extensions now using "leftovers" from failed pipes (ie cutting trim rings from a damaged vulcanite stem). I have a couple of deer antlers, but haven't tried using them yet - but I found a nifty source for materials! Crusing ebay for pen making supplies, I fou...

As I recall it was the Water Buffalo Lodge. I trust Random, that you have a large furry hat with horns somewhere in your workshop.
Well he used to have one, but he removed the horns and used them as stem inlays....

Selling supplies is still in the works. I am likely going to have some Vulcanit in the next 6-8 weeks, and it will likely be a few months after that for briar. In other words, it will be a while, but I am still very active in pursuing the supply venture. Great! I'm ready to score a bit of vulcanite...

If I turn them to optimal shape, length, etc... it invariably fits loose when I finish smooting and polishing the thing. If I leave enough material for finishing, it invariably takes FOREVER to get the stem to fit smoothly and more often than not I goof up an edge or angle in the process. Gee, and ...

I'm with Random - the entire process is difficult! Luckily I found this site prior to making my first pipe, so learning was made quite a bit easier due to this wonderful resource! I've only made 7 pipes, but I'm still having the same major problem (and it's really starting to p*** me off! I invariab...

I have no idea about spreading out the smoke, but I like the look and feel of this type of bit. A few of my Dunhills have bits like this, and as I recall one of my Pete's has it also. I like the "mouth feel", so I've sanded the bits on my last few pipes like that also, using sandpaper wrap...

I've been making pipes purely for my own smoking enjoyment, and the pleasure I get in working with the briar. I have no plans to ever sell any pipes, although I may (and probably will) give away a few to friends. I started doing this just to see if I could, and while I'm happy with my results, I hav...

I've grown tobacco before with some seeds I got from seedman.com (highly recommended). Unfortunately it was so hot here in Texas the second year, that my "crop" (about 8 plants) withered away. It was a fun experiment, and relatively cheap though. I "cured" it by hanging it in the...
