Tyler,

I'll take 4 pieces of the medium to large bamboo. Two of each size if you have them separated.

It was good to meet some of the guys even though I showed up late. Rad Davis was also there. I sold one pipe and got some great feedback from several people including some great advice from Rainer Barbi. I met so many people that the names are all a blur. I can't recall when I last enjoyed myself as...

Neil,

Assuming that they are all the same inside, I like the tan (mid brown?) 2/4 in the middle of the pack. If you're taking reservations you can put my name on that one. See you Thursday night.

Definitely an Ultimate Pipe bag! Just a 2/4 though but I've been waiting patiently for months. Maybe a calabash and/or a meer. Lot's of feedback on my pipes. And looking, talking, looking, talking etc. :D :D

I use Viking band saw blades. They are made in Sweden and the tooth set is machinged so they are exactly equal on both sides. They cut extremely well with no drift and no bending. I'm using a 1/4" x 6 TPI. It cuts fast and leaves a smooth surface. They do cost more than the standard hardware st...

On second thought, 10:00 pm Thursday sounds good. A great way to start off a great weekend. It will give new timers like myself a chance to get some tips from the old hands! :D

Tyler,

I won't get to the resort until 8:00 pm or so on Thursday. I prefer any time after Thursday night.

See you there!

I apply my light colored stain before rusticating then apply a good coat of wax. The wax coat must cover well. Then I rusticate and apply the black stain. I wipe of the pipe right away with a dry rag then one with a bit of alcohol. This works quite well as long as the wax coat solidly covers the pip...

My experience is the same as Ben's. I ordered 50 blocks and out of 24 so far I have two pipes that were finished smooth. Those two did not have grain to brag about but they were free from pits or cracks. I consider the rest of the JH blocks to be for rusticated pipes only. The pits and cracks are sm...

The brair I was using before was from Juam Hom. His extra/extra Plateaux is very good on grain, but the sand pits are usually large, deep, and not easily overcome. I agree. I am working with Juam's briar now and finding the same problems. I've pitched two blocks this week because of splits. Previou...

Does anyone know a distributor for GL Pease in Canada? I don't think there is one at this time. I get GL Pease from either Smoking Pipes or Cup O' Joes. Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice blend, non-flavored and preferably a Scottish blend? Try Bufflehead Wood Duck. I'm just finishing my f...

Ben I always drill a guide hole with a Forstner bit. I use a bit 1/16" smaller than the tobacco chamber bit and drill about 3/4 of the final depth. I've found that I can get much more accurate drilling and I can use a more rounded end on the chamber bit. I tried drilling without the pilot hole ...

I've made a few with either briar or African Blackwood for the foot and some other wood such as purpleheart for the stem. I've used the blackwood tamper a lot and it works well. Of course, only the years will tell how well it will stand up. I think I will make one with a briar stem and blackwood foo...

I ordered 10 medium Tassili blocks from Briar Grains in April. They came a bit on the small side although Yazid warned me about that before I ordered. I got to practice a lot of stem extensions. The grain was very nice, the blocks were dry. There were a few problems with pits, one pipe was lost tota...

After applying the melted wax, heat the stummel and use a tooth brush to flick the excess wax off working on a portion at a time. You will have to frequently rub the wax build up off the tooth brush using the edge of your bench or your fingers - carefull, that wax is hot! You can easily remove too m...
