I always stain early so I can see where I've sanded and to detect scratches and any uneven areas. Works well for me too.

Thank you all for taking time and giving me suggestions. I usually let stain dry at least 4 hours before spit coating but the spit coating removed some of the black stain too. I let the stain dry overnight. I will try your suggestions this weekend unless I "chicken out" and sand the rim th...

Help on Staining Rim Black

The pipe I am working on - I rusticated the bowl but left the rim smooth. Then I stained with Fiebings USMC black and a spit coat shellac. With an extremely light buff, the briar color showed through. I removed the shellac and some of the stain with denatured alcohol and stained again. The rim is no...

Fun Pipe to Make

This is the pipe I had in Columbus that I showed to Kurt. It was fun to make. So, I figured I would post it.

I, too, had a great time in Columbus at the show. It was great meeting Kurt. Thank you for saying such nice things about the pipe I showed. Kurt had a pipe that I drooled over - a long shanked bamboo shield shape. It sold quickly. The reception at Smokers Haven was also a nice event. Premal showed m...

No Tandy shops close by so I have found Fiebings Dyes at Shoe Repair shops. They also are more than willing to order in colors for me that they do not stock.

If he doesn't bend then the pipe will be stuck with a backwards lean on the bowl, from what I can tell from 1 picture.
It would definitely have a backward lean.

Thanks, Ben, for your comments. I may not go back and rebend again as I may not want to "fiddle" any more.

Re-bent Stem

After the thread I posted and reading all the advice given, I decided to re-bend the stem. The first picture is the original that I posted and the second is a picture of the re-bent stem. I hope you agree, I think it looks a lot better. I did not have any trouble with the re-bend. Now to re-buff and...

Thank you all for your help. I think I will re-bend the stem with the technique that you all talked about. I will also keep the bend very slight and rounded. Maybe use a scotch bottle instead of a Corona bottle.

Help Please about stem bending

I have just bent my first stem. It is a Lucite stem (pre-made) that I put on a slightly bent dublin pipe. When I bent the stem, it bent in an angular shape (elbow shape) not a curved shape. I bent it to an angle about 25-30 degrees. Sorry, no pictures yet. The stem looks good on the pipe although it...

My Fourth Pipe

I made my first pipe in September, a poker, and I was hooked. I made a second poker which was much better. In November, I took a "class" with Tim West. In all, I have made five pipes, all from kits that I got from Tim. This lovat I finished in December - it was my fourth pipe. http://i28.s...
