John Loring's book, The Dunhill Briar Pipe, says the following. "In 1978 a formal four and five digit system was introduced with the first digit being the pipe size, the second being the bit type, and the third and fourth denoting the shape, with, for several years but no longer, an optional fi...

I'm glad you made it OK and it's good to hear from you so quickly! Until things cool down a bit, why not smoke an extra bowl in the evening?

I agree completely with Todd on this. Respirator=good idea. One can never be too careful. I always wear mine when sanding and shaping with power tools.

On the other hand, you may be able to predict the tastes of a particular person based on knowledge of their past and the segment of society they associate with. Profiling, essentially, and I'm sure this would work. As a college professor who teaches speech communication and debate, one of the thing...

Wow! Be sure to let us know when you get any video clips posted on your site. I just love watching people make pipes. Eltang's web cam is so addictive but it refreshes too slow for me. One of the things I really like about Tyler's video clips is that you can actually see what he is doing.

As mentioned earlier, a forstner bit works really well here. I would recommend getting one that is about 1.5 inches diameter because it can be used to smooth the top of the chamber as well. The key to using the forstner is to not move the block until you have used both the forstner and the drill bit...

Mix activated charcoal powder with sodium silicate solution (also called water glass) until you have a thick but flowable solution. Apply it to the bowl and let it dry. Both are available at chemistry supply stores.

I like the feeling of "community" for lack of a better word, folks involved in the same craft all trying to help each other. That's a good thing, and not something you find everywhere. In this one statement, Random has summed up what I consider to be the strength of this site. I'm honored...

I use my lathe (turned off and not running) and clamp it between the headstock and the tailstock. This has worked well for me and the parts do not expand. The only problem is it keeps the lathe from being used for other things. I often will set it up before going to bed and then take it out of the l...

I suggest trying some of the Esoterica blends. There are a wide variety of good blends to choose from and several should fit your criteria for cut. Margate is a great tobacco and is ribbon cut. Dunbar is a broken flake that is quite tasty. If you want to try something unique, I remember Greg Pease m...

Re: Pipemaking: Most Difficult Aspect

Hey Guys, What sorts of things do you find particularly difficult to master? Excellent question Todd! When I look back on my early efforts at making a pipe the thing I notice is a problem where the shank flows into the bowl. Most of those early pipes look clunky in that area and to my eye, I did no...
