Re: #14 Dublin for critique
Good job at self-critique. I get freaked out when my bite zone hits 3.2mm that I might sand through. You could sand on 4.7mm for 20 minutes just fine without sanding through. When you say the finish is good, I think you can do better. Take that as more of a challenge than a criticism. And bowl/shan...

Re: #14 Dublin for critique
I believe you can take a close look at the pipe and critique yourself, especially from the cheeks to button.

Make the other material hole diameter larger than your tenon, then face off and use a delrin tenon. You could also make the other material, in the same fashion and shape the integral tenon up to your other material.
Super glue or epoxy, but 98.347% of the time I use super glue.

I use 3M white phasing tape and a hole punch from Harbor Freight, you can buy a set of them for a couple of $'s.

Re: Pipe Making - Post Chicago
My intentions were to clean the dust collector yesterday, but I did the filthy job today. The top filter was packed and now it's like new. Thank goodness there was a steady breeze and all the dust I created blew down the alley into others homes! The dust the air compressor created rivaled that of th...

Dear Timberwolf,
Perfect focus on the wall outlet.
You need to zip tie the other side.
I know this helps,

Went in the shop.
Vacuumed.
Dusted.
Cleaned and oiled the lathe.
Made six sanding discs.
Tidied up my desk.
Threw away used up sandpaper.
Watched TV while farting around in there!
Tomorrow I will empty the dust collector..............Egad it's very full and will be heavy.

The use of a pin gage set makes life so easy versus the thought of having to use forstner tools.

Re: Flying with my pipe
Bring your pipe, lighter, tobacco, etc. As long as you don't have a torch lighter, all's okay.
Not to be snarky, but how do you think all the pipes got to the Chicago show?

Don't use a brass brush! The brass is soft and will transfer to the briar.sig wrote: You could also go at it with brass brush in your hand.

Re: First post in the Gallery
Doc, I like the pipe, but feel the stem overpowers the aesthetics. The shank is very graceful, but there is way too much meat to the stem. I believe the underside of the stem, below the swoop tail, should flow with the shank and some material taken away from the top, from the swoop back. Just thin o...

Re: Sandblast Staining
Sas is correct.
You need to know that all briar doesn't stain the same, especially blasted pipes.
This is where one needs to experiment.
One that some do is to stain dark, blast again lightly, then a lighter coat of stain.

Nice piece, but you have a few scratches at the shank bowl junction.
