Wow, it's good to hear of first pipe horror stories. For me, not you...because I went ahead and purchased a "pipe kit". The whole thing looked a little weird when I opened it. The block looked sort of small but I guessed that that was okay. Then I looked at the drill for the tobacco chambe...

I like the idea of a new stem via a dowl and the bowl. I think it would look more intentional. Its nice other than THAT HUGE GAPING WOUND VISIBLE FROM VIET NAM.! LOL

Kurt,
In looking at some briar online obviously you can't really get a good look at the quality of the briar, but they do have different names which I assume reflects the probability of a higher grain.

What would briar like that be called? And how many grades will you find that are named?

Ah Kurt!

That one spot really doesn't look bad. The rest of the pipe is so beautiful it just seems to be a flair of art you added on purpose. Man I have not had that happen to me yet and it still is killing me!

These are the essence of why we love our pipes! They represent in us our imaginations. Each of us could look at these and draw a mental image of ourselves as Ahab! They take us straight into the heart of the story! Whatever the price paid in aggrevation and sweating blood to get them just right is w...

Thanks Nick!
I think I'll go for the beginers deal, It could be fun to have different pipes and maybe create a beginer/mentor type team and see how the individual pipes come out!

I love the idea of putting them all on Gallerey as well!

So....ANY BEGINERS UP FOR THE CHALLENGE?

I would be in for any one of them!
Is there enough of us really really inexperienced guys to consider a pipe on a beginners level?

I'd sure hate to screw up what was once becoming a beautiful pipe!

Kurt,
I just looked at some Oneway Talon chucks on one of the sites you recommended on the other thread.

The Nova chuck I have is VERY similar! The plot thickens!

Wow! I had no idea that was a Calabash! And I don't think that I have ever seen one like it! It's absolutley beautiful. That one has a nice tight straight grain, and the birds eye on the cap is a feast for the eye. That is the type of thing that I would look for in my own pipe collection. Something ...

AAAAAAHHH! The old outbuilding garage loft above the foundation you're lucky to have a parking space at all trick! VERY nice! Perhaps a bit treacherous, but nice! I have the Nova 50 mm. I over stated the correct size. The manual describes this as a scroll chuck with 50 mm add on jaws, which slide. T...

Thanks David! For the begining I'll use the Nova chuck minus two sides if I can and them head to woodcraft and look for a Jacobs (size?) and look for the ONe Way Talon (size?) How about bits and stems? What Bit sizes are needed for this? Thanks for all the info! Dyes!!! Right!!! I remember now. I al...

buying disorders

Actually, I really appreciate the advice. I spent many years on the road, and every year I bought a couple of nice peices for my shop. I had at one time, A scroll saw, Jet cabinet table saw (with the exacta fence) router table and a jet jointer all sitting in their boxes un-opened for nearly four ye...

lathes

Thanks. I'm glad to be here. I asked WoodCrafters if they sold a mini metal lathe and they didn't but I suppose I could ask them to order one. Thanks for the sizes as well. Like everything else, it's the goodies that make it more expensive, but way more fun too! It's like taking two days to build a ...

Marks, Thanks so much! It's becoming very clear that a good portion of this is trial and error! Is the Taig a metal lathe? I haven't heard of that one. I have a nice selection of files, sanders of various kinds, both electric and Hand. My sanders run from small hand held simple blocks to the Delta S...
