Re: Keeping Warm in your Shop
I would be telling the electrician to not expect any more of your business since he can't keep his big fucking mouth shut! What does he care what you are using the shop for?? Put the fucking electrical in...get paid....walk away. Are he and the inspector butt buddies or something? I would have a ha...

Re: Sharpening Standard Drill Bits
sharpening s&d bits on the bench grinder is pretty easy with practice. drilling metal or hard exotics can dull a bit fast. what i've found surprising is that precise angle isn't critical, if the bit is even on each side and within a few degrees of where you want it you can get an edge like almos...

Re: Keeping Warm in your Shop
So I guess last week before power was turned on to the new shop the electrician mentioned to electrical inspector the shop was going to be used for carpentry. So the electrical inspector says any wood working in here makes the building class 3 division 1 and everything needs to be class div rated. a...

Re: woods
all cherry trees are closely related, wood from a wild cherry (Prunus virginiana) is nearly identical to commercial cherry, just smaller trees. takes a long time to air dry the branches.

Re: Cracked shank
would it be wrong to fix it with CA and clamp the crack shut with a rubber band around the shank? might be just about an invisible flaw, guess it depends on who the pipe is for. might be a good idea to CA it shut first and access even if you went to turn it down after less chance the crack would chi...

Re: "Scottie" Stacked Billiard
is that called a reverse tenon? assuming its because the shank is very thin? i like the tall bowl reminds me of pipe dan "each bowl is high... thus longer smoking!" http://www.danishpipemakers.com/pdf/pibedan_61_62.pdf

Re: Bees wax
beeswax melted with walnut oil makes a fantastic low lustre finish on just about anything you don't want to buff. about stabilizing the mortise and loose tenons, I've done this a few times and found the alcohol swelled the mortise and made a tight fit, but a couple weeks later the tenons fit loose. ...

Re: Water glass/ Sodium Silacate solution
sodium silicate is some crazy stuff if you read the wikipedia. its used as an industrial high temperature component for coatings and adhesives, or was used in the pioneer days to preserve eggs for months. other big use is for turning into foam when it gets very hot for stuff like coating inside pipe...

Re: Delrin sleeves
I switched to west systems epoxy for delrin its more of a 24 hr. for my application had the occasional joint failure with 5 minute stuff when doing a batch of tenons and the slower setting epoxy will flow more inside the joint.

Re: Stain question
you know what's hard to dye? bamboo. made some long stem gandalf style pipes and heat bent / 320 sanded bamboo for a long curved shank extension. looks good dyed to match the stummel, very hard to get dye to penetrate 2-3 coats then shellac or most of it just buffs off. any suggestions? almost think...

http://tools.woot.com/offers/craftsman-6-piece-turning-tool-set-3?ref=cnt_wp_1_4 Even if they suck maybe you could use them as blanks and make something else out of them. got a set like that on ebay, then picked up a couple of nicer tools with thicker steel = longer bevels stay sharp longer, longer...

Re: pipes in tobacco store
in my experience you can expect a retail outlet to sell at 2x cost unless you have the pieces on some type of commission arrangement. Would be interested to know how the numbers usually go if a pipe maker were to approach a pipe shop?

Re: Osage Dublin
isn't osage a fruit wood? it grows these alien pod type oranges right I would look into the smoke-a-bility of Osage. It is a gorgeous wood, and the pipe looks nice, but I would be concerned with any toxicity it may have. My student and I are currently using it as decorative materials for stem inlays...
