Re: Laser engravers

i got one of the cheap K40 laser engravers off ebay this spring, after reading all of the message board comments, I went for it anyway and overall couldn't be more happy with the machine. by now if it wore out I would just replace parts or get another one, probably put 100 hours on it with no issues...

wizard pipe

wizard pipe i've been working to refine this series to make the pipe cooler, keeping with the fantasy theme. I've been making pipes for about five years and haven't posted in the gallery before, probably worried about being ripped a new one with a critique. my end goal isn't nessesarily to make uber...

Re: Elder Wood

you're talking about boxelder right? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Box_Elder it has a soft pith you can bore out with a hot wire like white ash or dogwood when its green, I think its an acceptable material for the long shaft of a peace pipes. its super soft and hard to work with, like its same janka...

Re: Tung oil

what about walnut oil? polymerizes in a couple days. if you were making large pieces that need a salad bowl finish, walnut oil comes up as one of the most popular options. i cut it with beeswax and microwave to make a paste, leaves a soft sheen. you can buff it after its dry.

Re: Drilling Speeds

probably higher speeds are ok on a drill press since there isn't a off balanced block spinning I drill all my pipes on the drill press around the 1000rpm rate but always turn it down real slow for using a ground spade bit in chambers chip clearing every 1/4" and waxing s&d bits with carnaub...

Re: One at a time or multi task

I find making pipes in small batches has helped me improve faster. drilling and shaping get easier with practice, and after the first one the second one is usually easier. going through the complete production cycle start to finish with a piece pieces at a time also gives you a good perspective on t...

Re: A lumber mill in China

like how they did the tracks in the concrete. i have a 1/10th scale version of that with a circular blade for slabbing up trees into awesome lumber, but thinking about making a real rolling carriage for longer and heavier logs. great to see a real grass roots operation its an inspiration thanks for ...

Re: Super glue and Vulcanite

I tried using CA without any dye to fix a stem with a hairline crack, the tenon turning tool broken the tenon and to save the stem i drilled it and fit with delrin, worked but it cracked a bit up the stem. so before throwing it in the bin tried to repair, seemed to work structurally and 100% invisib...

Re: The Smoking Yeti

You are also a criminal. Smoking at 17! Kids these days... Actually that is a misconception, because tobacco laws forbid selling tobacco products to minors, not actually forbidding smoking to them. As it is with alcohol, its not allowed to sell or serve it to them, but that does not mean that they ...

Re: What is a Pipe Turd?

the advice i would give myself thinking back would be to setup a decent shaping wheel, the angle grinder backing with 36 grit works super good, sharper cuts on the edge, find its so much easier to take more material off all my pipes are getting leaner, less turd like. haven't made one too skinny yet

Re: drilling and facing curved bamboo

i've always done bamboo on the drill press with a counterbore. step 1 make sure counterbore is razor sharp , step 2 stick bamboo up through drill press table and clamp with v blocks. sometimes treat the top with ca first to get a nice cut. bending bamboo can be done with a propane torch and somethin...
