Opium pipe... the bowl isn't big enough for hash, which needs to be mixed with tobacco.

Pipe Tobacco Tax

Have you all heard of H.R. 4439? - the Tobacco Tax Parity Act of 2010 was introduced on January 13, 2010 and would raise the tax on pipe tobacco 775% from $2.8311 to $24.78 per pound. I have recently spend $100s to stock up on pipe tobacco in expectation of this passing. It sucks. Pipes Magazine has...

Re: Baby food jars

No, they don't work well. They never align right and seal properly once they have been opened. I have about 6 baby food jars of stain powder to prove it... they were once mixed with alcohol. I don't think it has anything to do with the seals degrading. I'm pretty sure the seals are silicone, which s...

Re: Very basic questions about forming a stummel from a block

I take that back, this guy makes pipes with his teeth and fingernails (takes forever), though he claims to have used every power tool his shop to make it. http://cgi.ebay.com/new-HandMade-Virginia-Black-Walnut-Wood-smoking-pipe-4_W0QQitemZ120304540765QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item1c...

Well, I'd say an electric drill, bits, files, sandpaper, and preferably a buffing wheel attachment are minimum if you're starting with an undrilled block. Pimo's book shows how to do it with minimum tooling.

It's a "sticky" post by Kurt about tooling up. Aspiring pipemakers all ask that same question when starting out.

Okay, I have to ask, since others haven't. How does that grooved anti-button work? Is it comfortable to clench this by the pyloric sphincter?

All but 2 of my pipes have been for my personal use. I feel I'm to the point in my pipe making that I can shape the wood how I want it. This was a personal skills test of sorts, I mostly passed, but it is a good object to refer to for improvement areas. Yes, always look for areas of improvement. I ...

Re: Pressing for flake

There used to be an outfit that made these for sale on the net. Can't remember the name... Yeah, someone over on coffinails or howtogrowtobacco mentioned it, only the info and links given were dead and I couldn't find any pictures or anything of it. Still, it's so simple to make, it would be ridicu...

Trippy. I dig it.

A good "crossover" pipe for those who go both ways - appeals to the other pipe crowd, but is engineered for tobacco.

From what I've gleaned through various bullshit sorta sources, wasn't cyano-acrylate glue basically designed as a flesh glue? I was under the impression that it was a Vietnam-era technology being tested as "instant stitches" in the field. Could be wrong. Check out the link in my post abov...

Re: Treating bamboo?

The great thing about bamboo, aside from being light, is that it does act like a sponge for yucky pipe juice. To treat or line it would be self-defeating. I haven't had any nasty side effects from years of goo build up... I consider it "seasoning" of the shank.

Re: Peterson P-lip Underside Slit

Oh yeah, about the pipe cleaner end... it has two thin metal wires coiled around each other. The two little pointy ends are what scratches up the inside of the airway. With small pliers you can bend just a mm of the little tips of the wire back 180 deg so the rounded bent ends don't gouge into your ...

Re: How to pack flake?

I fully rub it out first (trying to separate ribbons out of the flake block) and let it air dry for awhile, depending on moisture content. Then pack as you normally would. Some people fold the flake right into the bowl (not too tight!). The flake has to be pretty dry to keep it lit with this packing...
