Re: Sanders for Pipemaking?

I put my motor on a dead man's switch. It's a foot pedal - press down with your foot, and it's on - take your foot off and it's off. I use it on the wood lathe too... nothing worse than trying to find the off switch when you've done something dumb.

... I think this little piece of land that we're on will grow a pretty good crop of grapes without a lot of irrigation, but not much else.... What, no tobacco?! I think you could manage some wild tobacco varieties, at the very least! Congratulations on a successful move and a future pregnant with p...

No sense in trying to cut out the middle man unless you want really large quantities. Tim is a good guy, he deserves a small profit for his services as distributor, among other things.

Re: Chamber shapes on full bent pipes

You make me feel dirty. I clean my pipes (about 20 in rotation, mostly my handmades) every 6 months or more and only use a pipe cleaner to clear out airway blockages while the pipe is smoldering. Otherwise, I just blow through the stem before packing and I'm good to go. The pipes don't foul up, in m...

I believe tongue-bite is caused by steam in the smoke or by a super hot dry smoke, so it is literally a burn on the tongue. My theory is that it is caused by: overly moist tobacco overly dry tobacco overly doctored tobacco tobacco packed too tightly tobacco packed too loosely tobacco packed (partial...

Those Bentley (or Prometheus or other private labels on same design) lighters suck. I've owned more than 4 and none lasted longer than a few months. The plastic gas "triggers" are the weak link in the chain. If you got the do-re-mi, get an Old Boy (IM Corona). If not, try a Xikar imitation...

Re: Chamber shapes on full bent pipes

If you like your conic bents, I would suggest that you adjust your airhole drill angle so the you just miss or barely puncture the chamber with the airhole drillbit at the desired point of intersection. Then complete a circular hole (as opposed to oval) from inside the chamber into the air path (a t...

Re: Hello to all and oh, is this fixable?

That block should never have been drilled, or at least should have been drilled to avoid the gorge. I wouldn't put much more effort into it. You are so close to the chamber, I wouldn't want any epoxy or anything as a chemical fastner. Perhaps drill out your airhole with a steep chamfer bit, creating...

I remove them and put them aside somewhere, in case I sell the pipe and the collector is crazy that way. Some quality pipes used such gimmickery including Dunhill's goofy tube and Comoy's.

Re: My First Pipe

I'd say proper sanding would improve the finish and stain problems. You can adjust most saturation differences with multiple stain coats and by varying sanding touch, pressure, or attention to lighten up the darker areas as you move through the higher grits. And you have to remove the deep tooling m...

Well, do report back on your oil-curing findings... it's one of those Holy Grail adventures and I've heard the secrets of oil curing are carefully guarded by the Cabal. I fear for your safety should you expose a successful method.

Re: I got me a burl, now what do I do with it?

Screw the oil curing. I don't get the point of this gimmicky extra step. Is it just supposed to "taste" better until the bowl is broke in?... whatever. Spend the time perfecting a honey, sour cream, activated charcoal, waterglass, carbon soot, yak butter tea, eye-of-newt bowl coating. So t...
