you guys are great. thanks again. i think i'll try sanding this particular one down and try to re-apply a stain to it. i didn't expect my first go to end up spectacularly but just hope this will help down the road, as it already has. i'll give the old pipe cleaner a go as an applicator and see how t...

thank you fellas. one other question i have regarding staining. do you allow it to dry in place or do you try to wipe 'excess' off while it's still wet? this wouldn't allow much time, but that's what i've been trying to do. i suppose i should just let it dry in place?

I think the grit may have gotten me in trouble, i sanded all the way through the micromesh grits and then applied the stain.

just single color staining. and i used a q-tip to apply the stain.

thank you again all. i ordered a few kits from PIMO just to make life easier for myself. i finished one this weekend... i still struggled with the shank, but am relatively happy that i've at least finished a stummel. the stem will be another story altogether. i think i might try making a stem and th...

thanks again. i also really had trouble shaping the junction of the shank and bowl, i think that was addressed already, but just wanted to reiterate where my problem was. i think i tried to make the shank round too early, just desiring some sort of outcome before i stopped for the night... perhaps i...

thanks guys. frank, thanks for the clarification, i guess i was actually asking two different questions, both of which were answered. i may try an ebauchon block for the next pipe... i felt pretty comfy with the drilling and such, i think i just overshot the bandsawing before drilling. thanks for al...

suggestions on technique

i gave pipe making a go for the first time the other night. in the interest of not screwing up, i decided to use a hunk of cherry wood instead of potentially ruining a nice piece of briar. i know all the drilling will be different with briar, but i thought i'd try it out to see how everything works....

i think one of my problems is i wasn't putting enough tobacco in the bowl. i was being really timid with tamping. i watched all the videos youtube had to offer and saw that i wasn't putting nearly the amount of tobacco in my bowls as others. i know youtube isn't an authority on bowl packing, but it ...

just wanted to thank y'all for your suggestions. my tastes are yet unsophisticated, but man do I LOVE b. hartwell evening stroll. i can't stop smelling it if i'm not smoking it. also really like the barbery coast, butternut burley and frog morton across the pond. i ordered but haven't tried the lane...

i can't remember the official name of the method, but it was a German fella on youtube or something where he showed how to pack the pipe... I've tried that a few times but it seems to put way too much tobacco into the pipe. first off, does anyone know what i speak of and do you have any success with...

nice work on all accounts. i like the knife also. did you shape the blade and harden it, etc or just make the scales to a pre-made blade?

keeping it lit

hey guys, i'm having a hard time keeping my bowls lit. does this indicate too packed or not packed enough? and it seems like i always just smoke a hole down the middle of the tobacco. can't ever get a good, even burn like a cigar or something. any tips?

thanks. :?

too young to smoke...

i thought you all might get a kick out of this. last weekend when visiting my brother, i smoked one of my pipes for the first time 'in front' of him. he was cool with it and all but remarked, "It's interesting that you're strangest childhood obsession carried through with you to adulthood."...
