Re: Lubing your lathe

Now THAT is one top-heavy hunk of iron! I bet moving was fun. Looks to be in good shape for being close to 100 years old! moving it was kind of awesome. we took it apart and loaded it in a truck, the guys we bought it from used a scissor jack to get the ways in the bed of the truck. everything else...

Re: Lubing your lathe

Any oil is better than no oil. I use just plain old engine oil, 20-40 usually. We are pipemaking, not NASA engineering, you just need to keep things running smooth and free from rust. Be sparing on anywhere that oil might meet with the briar, that's a lathe specific thing you will have to learn for...

Re: Lubing your lathe

An after-thought: If the gear train is not well protected you might consider moly-disulfide or tungsten di-sulfide in lieu of the JAX. Both are dry film lubes and will not make a gawd-awful mess like the JAX (or anything like it) will do if totally exposed to briar dust. I would definitely use the ...

Re: Lubing your lathe

Mobil Vactra #2 for the ways and for anything that has an oil cup. JAX synthetic gear lube for the gear train. Extremely sticky stuff and as such will not get slung all over the place. DO NOT get it on your clothes. awesome, thank you for the reply! cleaning it up and putting it together tonight an...

Lubing your lathe

hey guys, my and my buddy josh just picked up a nice old southbend lathe. it's big, i took the advice on the forums and went for a bigger lathe then we think we'll need. it's a 12"x60" from 1919 i believe. bought it from a machinist, and it is pretty restored, in good working order, etc. w...

opportunity to use a workshop full of tools

been a while since i've posted here. i've got an opportunity to rent out tool access for $125 a month. this place has sandblasting equipment, wood and metal lathes, fool woodworking shop (with dust collection) and instructors on how to use the big boy tools. here is a link (in case there is one in t...

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade

Sadly, I'm out. My pipe got flung from my hand on the belt sander and cracked the bowl. I won't be able to finish one in time. Sorry guys. I'm bummed. First time I launched a pipe. I'm putting a pillow under that damn thing

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade

the ninth would help me greatly. i'm getting there but the stem is not what i want it to be. i'll be mostly done buy the fourth i think but the breathing room would make for a better end product. after seeing everyone else's work i'm almost embarrassed i joined, but it's definitely making me want to...

Re: 2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade

so far i've ruined two pieces of briar and two pieces of ebonite, but i'm still in, barely. this is way harder than i originally thought. i'm hoping to get it done this weekend sans staining. i might have to get a prefab stem and overnight it though. the first stem i cut was easy, and this one is ma...

Re: Couple questions on rods and stems

I'm in the process of finishing my first hand cut stem. I used a drill press and belt sander and files. Bought some ebonite off of peg leg on this forum. I'm pretty stoked I did it. Its kind of scary when you start to make the stem but it was actually pretty easy. I'm not going to buy any more premo...

Re: Very first steps...

i bought the reject blocks from pimo for my first two pipes. they smoke great! had some flaws of course, but they where like half off. i think JH has some cheap briar, but it isn't predrilled. actually carving the block was the only thing that let me grasp what i was getting into. nothing made sense...

2012 Pipe In the Hat Trade

Would I be a big jerk to try and get in on this considering I've only made a few pipes? That shape seems like a good challenge and I just ordered some blocks and drill bits.

New aspiring pipemaker from Palo Alto CA

Hello Pipemakers Forum! I want to thank you all for the knowledge and inspiration for this hobby. I'm a new pipe smoker, and a brand new pipemaker. I didn't even think you could really make pipes at home when I started smoking pipes until I saw some briar blocks for sale at my local B&M. They ex...
