Re: Sanding and polishing a meer

I do a full dip after corking up the chamber and mortise. Leave it in for a couple of minutes... Then I use a heat gun to help the excess drip off. After it cools, take a clean white t-shirt cloth and hand buff it to a shine using a decent amount of pressure.

Re: Sanding and polishing a meer

No, do not buff it! Just sand the best you can, then dip it in the melted wax. The wax will cover all your sins! :D

I had the "Steak vs. Sizzle" conversation many times over the weekend. Some guys are selling the steak, some guys are selling the sizzle. These days you need to do both, because, apparently, the good steaks don't sizzle themselves!

Kent has the steak, now he needs the sizzle.

Assuming you're working with dry meerschaum at this point, get some 3M Trizact 3000, http://3mauto.com/products/3m-trizact-performance-sandpaper-3000-grit-03064.html#lPFMtC7OjCWFvJjM.97 Sand very lightly with the Trizact, almost like you're just trying to wipe the scratches off one stroke at a time....

Re: My first hand cut stem (Almost)

I'm a fan of the NYH Ebonite, with SEM coming in second. The NYH does not eat tools as quickly as SEM and isn't as powdery when drilling. I will say that the NYH is a "STINKY" Ebonite :D I must concur. NYH is all I'll use anymore. I have had problems with inclusions with SEM, and after tr...

Pipe Rolls

Recently, I found myself suffering from a lack of briar inventory. Apparently, I didn't plan far enough ahead, going through what I had on hand too quickly and my next supply order was being delayed... So, for a little over a week, I was out of work. I needed to do something productive, so I turned ...

Re: Bent Pipes: Shank angles and Curves - Two Case Studies

I started to write a post apologizing for my use of the terms "right" and "wrong"... then I deleted it all in favor of reinforcing what I really think. I know that shaping is ultimately subjective, and different strokes for different folks and all. I also know that in my given ex...

Re: I guess I better introduce myself too...

I didn't know crying with us was an option. Can we organize this as a group event in Chicago ? Maybe we can get some tent space Friday night. "Cigar Lounge and Pipemakers Bawl 7:00-11:30 pm " They used to have a Pipemakers meeting at the Chicago show back in the day... All of the pipemake...

Re: apparently its called blood dragon wood

If you think the wood is pretty, you should see the tree it came from!

Have you tried shining a light through the orange part yet? Should be somewhat translucent.

I don't really know, to be honest with you. When this happens to me, the pipe becomes a chew toy for my dog.

Sure, you can fill 'em...

Just don't sell it, unless you want that to be the quality of pipe associated with your brand.

Re: Classic Pipe Shapes

3- I need to start studying shapes. Then I need to start drawing them. A few months ago I began focusing on drawing my pipes out in detail before starting them, to include stem and any embelishments. This has helped me a great deal in having a clear picture of what I want my end product to look lik...

The bottom example looks crowded whereas the top one ...
