Another bowl coating question.

I have ordered some sodium silicate solution and some carbon powder to coat the bowls of my pipes. Just on a whim. I've watched LL's video on how to do it and will practice on one of my earlier pipes this evening. But, I have a couple of related questions. 1. When ...

Bowl coating pealing everytime

Hello friends, I've been trying to coat the bowls in my pipes with the sodium silicate/charcoal mixture and the coating doesn't stick to the walls. I've even tried sanding the walls before coating without success. Any thoughts?

Hey guys. I have decided to start experimenting with bowl coatings, partially because I think my pipes rarely look really complete with the bare briar bowl, and partially because I like the idea of some extra protection in the bowl since I can't possibly ...

Bowl Coating Magic

Hi Folks,

All the bowl coating recipes I've seen have no quantities on them; they just list ingredients. (For example, this one.) Are they typically mixed in 1:1 ratios? Is it something you just have to figure out for yourself? Any tips from you guys who regularly coat your bowls?

Thanks,
Greg

TiN Coating on Drill Bits

Hey Guys,

Ever on the quest to try new drill bits, I realized that I've never used TiN coated bits before and was wondering if anyone out there has. If so do you recommend them... and why/why not.

Cheers,
TC

Try this tobacco chamber coating...

Charcoal, powder sugar and water. Mix to a paste and apply to tobacco chamber to finish inside of bowl. Also helps to create a quicker burned tobacco coating.

It won't spoil like some of the other coatings that used sour cream and buttermilk.

Briar Coating

Over the years there has been discussion back and forth over what to use as a finish for the briar. Most pipemakers seem to prefer plain Carnauba Wax and/or Shellac. Other than a few manufacturers, most experienced pipemakers advise against using varnishes such as polyurethane. I don't use varnish a...
