Re: Noob question on staining part II

The stain must be buffed eventually. I use a thin shellac coat which can be rubbed to even out the stain- I use a make up pad. I sometimes sand after ...

Re: Opinions on Linseed Oil.

I think you can finish a pipe with just about anything, but you have to understand what look ... to dry). I can get a very high shine from danish oil if I polish on top of it, same with shellac. If I had to choose one do-all pipe finish, I'd take super thin shellac.

Re: Going to try bamboo.

As for finishing, the bamboo has a thin skin and you don’t want to sand though it, so you have to be careful matching ... with a burr (sort of like doing a cavity in a tooth), then just use a little shellac, others just leave the dark spots. DocAitch

Re: High shine spots using shellac

French polish technique to remove excess while the shellac is tacky still. It will even out on all the surfaces. Super thin solution. Dip a wad of cheese cloth that has a micro amount of oil on it and then squeeze out and rub thoroughly.

Re: High shine spots using shellac

Yep. I do what Sas and Kurt do. Thin it down more and add coats until you're satisfied with the level of shine once it's dried. Not there yet? Add another coat.

Re: High shine spots using shellac

Thin it more, do more coats. Shine on shellac is directly related to how much there is on the surface. You can gently buff for even-ness too, but the basic process should leave the pipe pretty even.

Re: Having trouble with shellac leaving streaks.

Thin, well diluted layer, apply with a brush (no matter if it's a cheap one) and then *wipe it away*. This is important. As Kurt said, the thing is that shellac is not *the* finish. It's most like a sealer, except that the lore says it breaths (how, it ...

Re: Having trouble with shellac leaving streaks.

I use a lighter blend, 1/4 flakes in alkohol. Then just a pice of cotton cloth to apply i one very, very thin layer.

Followed by buffing with tripoli, white diamond and last carnauba wax.

Re: Shellac application on Strawberry Wood

Shellac will be shiny. It will wear down some with handling. If it’s not old and gummy, it should dry overnight in most places. Maybe 2-3 days if it’s a thick coat. If it’s too thick, you can thin it out with denatured alcohol.
