Re: OK, it's time for another ShitStorm thread
I say good for him! It looks like he made the commissioned pipe process really interactive. The customer wanted a diplomat that was inspired by Dunhill, not a dunhill diplomat. The pipemaker in the post is known for his billiard family of pipes, right? I imagine that making a diplomat might have bee...

Re: Tung oil
How are those pipes doing Kiel? I have been playing with pure food-grade walnut oil, and it's good at certain stuff, not so much at others. One of the weird things it seems capable of is penetrating otherwise unpenetrable briar - it'll wick right through 1/2" of material overnight, and that's ...
Re: #4 Zulu
The couple zulus I made are too fat too. I downloaded a bunch of pictures to try and get the shape suitable, but mine are still too fat. I ended up getting a hold of a dunhill zulu, and took a bunch of pictures before I sold it. I'll see if I can find the pictures and post them when I get a chance.

Here is a link to a past thread that touches on this http://pipemakersforum.com/forum/viewto ... =35&t=5029
There is some good info on some other pipemaker's processes.

Re: rough shaping mostly done....
I would say spend some more time shaping. The back side of the bowl looks like it has a bulge that can be knocked down, get the whole bowl more symmetrical, the top view of the shank bulges on the left and right while the side view bulges up. Get the striaght parts straight and the curvy parts smoot...

Re: My first pipe (Questions)
One fairly logical explanation that Kamkiel didn't include in his list was a slightly oversized tenon. How tight is the fit? I've cracked a few mortises by fitting them with a tenon. Then again you'd have noticed because of the cracking sound :-D Oh yeah, and in oversized tenon  If you fin...

Re: My first pipe (Questions)
First, I'd like to welcome you to the "cracked shank" club! One of the many frustrating clubs that most of us are apart of. My guess it that you sanded your mortise too thin while shaping the pipe. If you could tell us the thickness of the mortise Or post a picture of the shank face then w...

Re: Need some ideas
Thanks guys. I feel I am better equipped for the next time this happens. Serious, went out and bought some wood to place in the tracks of all my sliding windows and doors, and an alarm system for the apartment. I also placed a blunted "weapon" conveniently under my side of the bed. Hopeful...

Need some ideas
Last night my home was burglarized. My wife's work computer was stolen and the money in my wallet. If the police every catch the a-hole I would like a good finishing technique to use on him(or her). Stealing shit really really rubs me the wrong way. People who feel they are entitled to other people'...

Re: fun with activated charcoal
That stuff is very messy when an uncooperatve overdose patient is getting it forced down his gullet. I generally found an excuse to leave the area and allow the nurse and tech to handle the job. :D DocAitch After the uncooperative o.d. patient eats their fill they generally look like zombie too. An...

Re: Tung oil
Bob Flexner's book "Understanding Wood Finishes" is a worthwhile resource. I would expect that you can order it there in China. If not, I could figure out how to send it over there for you. Fantastic book! You will save yourself a lifetime of experimenting by simply reading through the re...

Re: PITH 2016!!!!!!
An early attempt in preparation for PITH. The brass ring is off center, and i need to be more careful with the tear out i'm getting on the tenons. Hopefully the next one will cooperate better :) http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/kjkktk123/IMG_5704.jpg http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/...

Re: Tung oil
So here is the result of the first two pipes i put tung oil on. I am going to beat them up and see how it goes. http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/kjkktk123/IMG_5686.jpg this cutty was doomed from the beginning (first attempt at drilling first) http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/kjkktk12...

I can't open the link, but that's because its blocked here in China. I hope in the future you can get your pipes posted onto the forum. I'd love to see them

Re: Chimney
That pin is quite interesting. Would love to see what the Tsuge pin looks like. Or is it the same as you made? Adding to Mr Jones: the button (front to back) seems a bit thin to me? Might just be me. Thanks Charl. I normally keep my button (front to back) around 2mm. I have a napkin lying around in...
Re: Chimney
Oh yeah, I smoked the pipe today twice! Once to break in the bottom half, and the second to try it with the chamber pin. It was quite nice, and I look forward to its next smoke. I'll have to try and get my hands on one of those tsuges for comparison.
Re: Chimney
My Buddy has a Tsuge chimney just like this. He claims it smokes great. On to the pipe, your main problem as I see it, is a less than graceful flow to the shank and stem. There is a lot more meat you can take off the stem on bottom primarily but also on the top as well. The bend seems to be concent...
Re: Chimney
I'm trying to figure out how it is you're smoking it. The bottom of the chamber doesn't show the airway... Good morning Jeremiah! The seventh picture is a shot of the whole chamber (plus the magnetic ball holding the pipe). The second to last photo has a picture of the briar pin that can be placed ...
