Re: tapered bit drilling

On a tapered airway, the slot will overlap the taper. The purpose of the slot is to evenly distribute the smoke through the button so the heat doesn't concentrate on one spot. In a shallow funnel, the smoke is moving too rapidly to make use of the slot. With a deeper funnel, the smoke has time to f...

Re: tapered bit drilling

Everyone does this differently. :) I drill with my tapered bit to within about 1/8" of the end of the stem, finish with the 1/16" bit and go from there. I've never had a problem with the draw, and it's been about 9 years since I shaped a stem into the smoke channel. Hope this helps. ...

Geez, Wayne, Google "inch to mm" and a conversion calculator shows right up. Then type in .150 and it shows 3.81 mm. :P

Re: thickness of stem behind button

Pay no attention to the light shining through. Go with 4 mm. If you've cut the slot properly, no one will bite through. 5 mm is way too thick to be comfortable between the teeth, unless you're Sasquatch. Mouth/tooth comfort is key. No one picks up the most uncomfortable pipe in their collectio...

Re: Pipe number 9

Would a boiled down coffee or tea work? Know it's not traditional but I'm strapped right now lol. I've never tried that, but I don't think I'd recommend it. You could try it and see what happens. :) The thing is you're talking about water based, and that can negate all of your fine sanding by raisi...

Re: Compressor Selection

The Ingersoll Rand compressor you linked is the 5 HP 60 gallon. I have the 7.5 HP 80 gallon and it works well. I would imagine the 5HP 60 gallon would run continuously with sandblasting demands. The 7.5 HP 80 gal is twice as expensive but doesn't run continuously and provides a bit more consistency...

All that said, I don't think there's anything wrong with making a dozen billiards. If that's what you like, rock on. It's a great shape, and good to learn. I just happen to think you can accomplish the same thing copying a Lars or a Davidson. :D I think Tyler is right, and the key is copying someth...

Re: Buffing with Tripoli?

Bowl to 6/800, stems to 1000, then buff with Tripoli etc. So it's a waste of time to sand to 5000? Using tripoli and white diamond is the equivalent of sanding to what grit? After compounding/buffing shellac and buffing with carnuba? I would say it's a waste of time. I sand to 600 and then stain &a...

You don't want to use a hoe to sharpen it. A hoe is best for garden use and not sharpening stuff.

Hope this helps.

It looks to me like you've shaped the top of the bowl to "imitate" a cant. The bowl drill should be perpendicular to the top of the bowl, and yours doesn't look like that. I could be wrong. :) Rad I'm so glad I finally get to say this to you. YOU ARE WRONG! Well, I said I could be. ...

What's the bowl diameter? Most pots are around 7/8. Shaping looks pretty god.
