Re: Billiard profile reference photos
I would say both are nice examples of a Danish style billiard. English style billiards tend to be less rounded with subtly less taper to the rim whereas Danish billiards tend to look a touch more egg-shaped.

Re: Pipe #12. Another billiard.
Definitely your best billiard so far. You're really dialing it in. The proportions of this one are within the realm of a decent billiard. That being said, if you're shooting for perfection, the bowl appears to me that it could stand to have a bit more material taken off. Compared to the thickness of...

Re: Bent Apple For Your Comments
I agree with JMG. It's very unbalanced. Bowl is very heavy looking compared to the shank. Shank is too short. The bend in the stem is abrupt. Heat the stem more thoroughly (not in one spot) and shoot for a graceful bend that carries through the length of the stem. The bowl dips down below the bottom...

Re: Straight billiard
Oh nevermind. I see it. Shape looks nice and well proportioned. The only thing from a shaping standpoint I see is the sudden flare of the end of your stem at the button and some flat spots that should be more rounded/tapered. The roughness of the tenon and faces of the stem and shank really only imp...

From what I can tell, this is a huge improvement. We really need a side profile shot to give a detailed critique.

Re: My eleventh pipe, another shot at a billiard.
Here's a CAD drawing I did of a proportionate billiard to hopefully help those struggling with the shape. Don't mind the stem taper. The taper shouldn't start right at the shank but it's too much work to draw it right. What I wanted to illustrate is the geometric connections between all the parts an...

When you're looking straight at the airway at the button, it should look like the shape of Stewie's head except more narrow.

Re: My eleventh pipe, another shot at a billiard.
To remedy what Sas is referring to, think of the lower third of the bowl as half of a sphere and the upper two thirds of the bowl as a slightly tapered cylinder or, more accurately, a very tall, skinny cone. The widest portion of the sphere is generally going to be roughly at the top of the shank. T...

Nice progress. Keep working on crisp lines and symmetry and they will generally get better with each successive one.

Re: Little short of a Lovat
Definitely better although proportion-wise it's a bit short and fat like an apple or a pot but still within the realm of a billiard.
Another suggestion on the saddle: a more acute cut looks cleaner and more professional. Gradual ramping comes off as lacking the properly rounded tool to make the cut.

Re: Latest Work At My Ongoing Attempt To Improve My Billard Making Skills
Wayne, if I trim the rim down to here, would that potentially correct the off- balance? https://i.imgur.com/36Pzycr.jpg No. Look at how the bowl cants slightly. The rim should cant slightly with it. As it is now, the rim is parallel to plane of the shank. The height of the bowl isn't the issue. It'...

Re: My eighth pipe, completed. A Classic Billiard.
IAWG, one of the hardest things to learn with making stems is finding the sweet spot between taking too much and not taking enough material off. You're way closer with the revision. A hair more can still come off; especially towards the bit/button.

Re: Latest Work At My Ongoing Attempt To Improve My Billard Making Skills
Not bad. Two things: 1) the rim is angled and should be at a 90 angle to the front of the bowl; 2) keep working on the transition from shank to stem. It should be seamless. This one is pretty tool dependent. Without a metal lathe, it can be difficult. Never shape the stem or shank without the two to...

Re: My eighth pipe, completed. A Classic Billiard.
Pretty good for a second billiard and eighth pipe. The biggest thing that stands out is that your stem needs more material taken off. The middle of the stem has a bit of a belly. Easy fix. I think the bowl shaping is good enough to make working a bit more on the stem worth it.

Re: My best effort so far
I think a thinner shank would make the overall composition better. As it is, the shank makes the bowl look smaller than it is. A little less rounding of the rim would give it more definition. It looks like it can't decide if it wants to be a Dublin or a pear shape. But it's definitely not a billiard...

Turn faster, take smaller cuts, and don't let just the tip of the square cutter make contact with the wood. With that tool, you really have to be careful that it doesn't drop below the midline of the wood.

Re: Churchwarden = wonderful education
I just recently had to turn down a customer twice. They were wanting a pipe made to a budget. Not a problem, I will do that if asked, assuming the budget is actually in my price range. Firstly they asked me to make a transparent stem. Not gonna happen on a budget pipe. I don't keep the material in ...

Could have used this video a few years ago. Parked my boat under a huge sycamore tree at the old house and a massive branch broke off and smashed the windshield.Sasquatch wrote: ↑Tue Mar 23, 2021 11:33 pm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITZ4YW6XECw
