Re: Selling your first pipe
Make it a priority to go to a show. Preferably not Chicago for the first one; there's too much there to absorb without some prep. The NASPC show in Columbus is a medium sized show in driving range of many great carvers. I get requests from random folks to drop in all the time. I'm sure other carver...

Wouldn't boiling water be an alternative solution for bending one of this size?

I personally think the foot should be ever so slightly canted forward and a bit slimmer. But that's really all I could think of as criticism, otherwise it's just a very very nice pipe!

Re: The size of the briar blocks from Catalonia.
Thanks Sasquatch! Your comments, as always exhaustive. In Russia, we have only the Italian briar. But there is no Spanish, Greek and Algerian Briard, I just wanted to work with them, too. I don’t and never will have a sandblasting machine, so my lot is good smooth pipes. (My workshop is my apartmen...

Re: The size of the briar blocks from Catalonia.
We used to believe other people. If Jaume Hom writes "Very Dense Grain," then why should I not believe him. After all, he knows that if I do not get what he promises. I will never come to him again. Why would he lose a new customer? Or am I wrong in this case? My point was more: this is n...

Re: The size of the briar blocks from Catalonia.
I have a few of them in stock, as they were gifted to me by Jaume Hom a few years ago. I used to visit his sawmill in the summer as we always go on holiday pretty close by. I'll be in Catalonia again next week even. I'll measure them if I remember next time in the shop. https://scontent-bru2-1.cdnin...

Sandblasted Reverse Calabash Wasp
One of my clients loves coming back to me with shapes out of my comfort zone, which he thinks I'll do nicely, and then requests one in his standard scheme: a black sandblast with an ivory stem, optionally a dark accent. This time, he came to me with pictures of a pipe by Rolando Negoita (he usually ...

Re: Pipe #3 Olive Wood Devil Anse
For third pipe, very well done. I sure as hell didn't make anything that nice in my first attempts. Some things that my novice eye spots on this one: 1) the bowl is too wide (front to back wise), especially on the shankside of the stummel there is a lot of wood left that shouldn't be there. It's mos...

fully agree with Kurt. If your jaws can't hold this, they're too short for pipemaking anyways.

exact mixtures differ vastly between makers and are often kept secret, but the basic medium that's most used is glass beads.

Answered my own question. The block I have isn't going to make a decent Eskimo, its too small. So I'm going to try for a BullDog. I already have stems for that anyhow It probably will, if you flip it on it's side :-) Since eskimo's are pretty squashed, you don't need more height than the width of a ...
