Re: What to look for in a used Foredom

P.S. When did kurt rise from the grave? At virtually the same instant that "Tyler" guy in Oklahoma disappeared. As in, OK, someone's gotta ask: Has anyone ever seen them together? Thought so. Me? I think they're the same person. Same size? Check. Same age? Check. etcetera The only questio...

Re: PITH 2020!

Kurt, what's the benefit? Sent from my bloopty-bloop, using hooty-hoo. Accuracy and repeatability. You'll never get the pipe mounted on anything accurately enough to get that ring concentric once you remove it from the lathe. I'm sure someone will describe to me some complex process or jig that cou...

Re: A question of speed

What Chris said - because the blocks are mounted off-center and can vibrate the crap out of your lathe, use what you're comfortable with and what the lathe can handle.

Re: Boring Bar for Making Tobacco Chambers

Something this lurker can actually comment on. HSS gets its strength from fine carbide precipitates that form. There are a whole range of compositions but the ones that are most relevant in HSS are M6C where the M is a metal atom. SO one metal atom and one carbon covanlently bonded in an fact cente...

It was composed years and years ago and relies heavily on deprecated javascript and php. I need to find some time to update it.

Re: PITH 2020!

Do you have a tip for creating a nice bowl-to-shank junction on a bulldog? I've heard that chainsaw files are the hot ticket for that transition, but I have VERY little experience shaping stummels in ways that don't relate to stem replacement. I'm sure someone will be along shortly, though. ...

Re: PITH 2020!

I just use the "tower jaws" on my Oneway chuck. It can be fiddly, but it shouldn't be a show stopper. Jaws with pins would help, but I have not, as yet, found a reason to get any. Just pay attention to detail and set the block right, using your drill bit as a guide, and all should be good....

Re: PITH 2020!

A dirty secret in pipe making circles is that the airway on a straight pipe doesn't need to be on the same axis as the mortis and shank. In this case you can adjust the angle the same way as you do on bent pipes - carefully. I generally do mortis, airway, then chamber - however, that is not a hard a...

Re: Boring Bar for Making Tobacco Chambers

I am quite a newbie on holding my tools sharp. I do not yet own a bench grinder. Is it possible to sharpen up my tool bit (straight round nose shape) on the table disc sander? What are you guys doing for a quick touch up? You can use any kind of grinding device - belt, disc, wheel, whatever. Some w...

Re: Boring Bar for Making Tobacco Chambers

You are talking about "tool" or high carbon steel there though Kurt, HSS is a different beast. Not only does it require high temperatures to anneal it, it also needs to be done for the correct soaking and cooling times and even then it is never really "soft". These times and tem...

Re: Boring Bar for Making Tobacco Chambers

FYI if Kurt is using HSS then he doesn't need to worry about the heat, you cannot draw the temper of HSS under normal circumstances. For comfort though you will want to cool it otherwise you will burn your hands. I understand that carbide bits can be heated without losing temper, but not really sur...

Re: Boring Bar for Making Tobacco Chambers

A lot of those x-y rigs are janky at best. Older ones that are robust can be found, but as you said, they cost as much as another lathe. If you have the means, I strongly suggest a metalworking lathe designed for that type of work - if it looks like something you want to do. One is not strictly nece...

Re: Boring Bar for Making Tobacco Chambers

This is definitely not for use on a wood lathe unless you've got one with a cross slide and compound. I have seen some turners do something like this with a fingernail gouge, but the hole is usually bigger. I did once see an old-school turner drill a hole in a lamp base he was making, but I don't kn...

Re: Boring Bar for Making Tobacco Chambers

Good point DocAitch - having ground steel for years, I've developed a feel for when to cool it off. If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot. :) The nice thing about hardened tool steel is that heat doesn't migrate very quickly, well, as compared to unhardened steel anyway. It's really easy to keep co...

Or, in my opinion, pretty much any professional sport. I was in a restaurant recently that had soccer on the TV. What an exercise in frustration to watch.
