Re: My first hand cut stem (Almost)

I've worked with SEM ebonite consistently for 3 years+. I've never had any issues with the material in probably close to 6-7 meters. Maybe some people have had issues with inclusions, but that hasn't been my experience. I've also used some NYH (mainly their Cumberland) and that does smell worse, bu...

Re: My first hand cut stem (Almost)

I'm a fan of the NYH Ebonite, with SEM coming in second.
The NYH does not eat tools as quickly as SEM and isn't as powdery when drilling.
I will say that the NYH is a "STINKY" Ebonite :D

Scott,
The piano desk is fantastic.
Wish you were able to have the dust collector and air compressor somewhere else! Can you hear me?

Yes, but I have a separator.

Re: Sandblasting

Hutch, Please remember that not all briar blasts the same. Rad and I talked about briar and how unpredictable it was quite often. Some pieces just melt away and other pieces, one's you know are going to blast easily, don't cooperate. It's rare that I can look at a piece and predict that blasting wil...

Found this at Lowes for 500. Thoughts? http://m.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-3-7-HP-60-Gallon-155-PSI-230-Volt-Vertical-Electric-Air-Compressor/3370356 That's a single stage............you need a two stage. My father always said: "Any jobs easy as long as you have the right tools." I've found this...

Re: Sandblasting help

I looked at compressors online that will push that CFM and dang, those are expensive. A 30 gal. compressor will take forever to blast. Like Ernie, I had a 30 gal. compressor and it gave me, maybe, 30 seconds of blasting. I realize it's expensive, but for our needs, a two stage, 5+ hp, 60 or 80 gal....

Re: Bamboo

With bamboo, I normally line the briar/bamboo to about 1/2" with stainless steel.............Buddha or regular. The channel in both are rather small and I drill 5/32", then 3/16" for the stainless steel tubing. I have used 1/4" Delrin when I have a large piece of bamboo.............

Re: Very Beginner Questions

Ernie laid it out well. 1. For me..........mortise, airway, chamber. 2. When shaping freehand, I normally set the shapes profile first, then begin to shape the shank, but not too much. At this point one can begin to shape the bowl. From there, I normally go from bowl to shank, bowl to shank............

To dis some of the board members is silly, Billy. Pay attention to what Jeremiah said. READ. Additionally, Jeremiah will give you some of the best answers around. Many on the board are full time pipe makers and give their time freely. All have worked diligently to learn the process of pipe making an...

Re: #16 oval shanked anse

The first one made, after the TV show, was by Rad. Out of curiosity, has anyone seen the actual one in person? To my knowledge, all we have are photos for a template. I just find this hard to judge one's interpretation of the shape. http://static1.1.sqspcdn.com/static/f/562758/18648692/1339168978757...

Go buy a French ruler. It's a valuable tool to use for symmetry. I use mine quite often.
