Re: New Pipe Maker wants critique
I use word count, it comes in handy when I do one of my lengthy show reports.

George, don't think it's TJ. It would be impossible for him to make something that fugly!
My first impression of this piece is a backed up toilet bowl.
Still, legs are being pulled!!!
He sure does have a lot of weeds in his yard!

Re: Olive drying?
I bought a big bag of rice at Costco and have done that with briar. It works. I've also left it in the blast cabinet and that works as well.
Just put in either and wait a couple of months.
I've done likewise with stummels that seemed a bit moist after drilling.

Re: Billiard question
Jeremiah has it pegged in his post.
Another thing I would do is to search ebay for some vintage Barling's, Dunhill and Comoy billiards. The standard English billiard should help.

Re: Maybe a finish question, maybe a wood one
Sure it's not tobacco oils? I've had a number of vintage pipes that seep through the briar. I did the old salt and alcohol treatment and that seemed to work.

Re: Vegan shellac alternative?
I'm sorry, but this is one of the more stupid questions ever posed to this board!
WTF? Just how many vegans smoke a pipe? Aren't they tree huggers? Briar comes from killing a tree!
I guess my bowl coating of yak snot and other proprietary ingredients would not be vegan.

Shellac is not animal based. It comes from the female lac, a bug!

Re: advice on panel pipe
Taper the stem.
In the future, when making a panel, I've found that shaping a billiard first..........then doing the panels is much easier and precise.
