Re: Acrylic vs Ebonite
Acrylic is cheaper and doesn't get ugly over time. That's about it. I think ebonite shapes easier, quicker, sands smoother and polishes prettier.

I'm the resident old fart noob Been hanging around since 2010 but have made less pipes than many pipemakers that started 5 years later. Life has too many options.

Re: Etiquette for commissioning a pipe
I'm a noob (yes, even after 7 years...) so what do I know, but my take's a little different. 1. If I promise a customer a smooth in a specific shape (which I normally don't!), he'll get it. That means 2 things: a) I might have to make 3 or 4 renditions which end up as blasts and are sold to others b...

Re: Pipe Maker’s Guild
Granted, there is more than 6 hours of work in that pipe. There were 77 hours in that jewel encrusted tugboat, but that didn't end up being worth 11.000$, even if it was for Fukushima, now was it? I'll admit it's a decent looking pipe, and contains several parts (like the sculpted person) that I ca...

Re: Pipe Maker’s Guild
If pipe making were a church, the guild bears the marks of a cult. That’s not to say there aren’t good guys in there. But the appeal to only people who follow their creed, rejecting outsiders, even if they’re rejecting the mainstream, and misleading innocent and inexperienced people into thinking t...

Re: Good Briar Block Selection
Thanks for the info and the heads up about the Yazid situation. Maybe i wont take the chance. I actually had already found the Calabria site like a year ago and have it bookmarked. Prices were kind of high for single blocks they had shown but man were they nice. Only thing is pretty much every bloc...

Re: Good Briar Block Selection
Unless you visit the carver directly, and pay big money, no-one is going to let you pick over a raw selection of blocks to find the best ones. If you visit the carver directly, depending on the carver, there's no obligation to pay big money for the privilege of choosing. Obviously you won't get $50...

Re: Fiber disc?
Don't you glue the fiber discs to the backing plate? That's what I do, superglue the fiber disc to the plate, weigh it down with a lathe chuck and you're good to go, when the fiber disc is worn you just tear it off and scrape the residue from the plate, then glue the new one on. that would obviousl...

Re: Fiber disc?
My backing is working fine, but for some reason I can't get the discs flat, they always have big wobble in them, making shaping harder than it should be
Even storing them with a few pounds of weight on them for a long time doesn't resolve the issue...

Re: Looking for pipe tools/supplies
for allround pipemaking you want at least a 9x20" metal lathe, but by all means go bigger if you can.
Precision Matthews is used by many american pipemakers.

Re: Keyholes and endcaps
A stupid question, but one I'll ask anyhow. Why ream the airway later? I've never had to do this with any of my pipes. Now i'm afraid i'm missing something. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk A pipe that's been smoked for 25 years and never decently cleaned, will have so much residue in the airwa...

Re: Anyone see an arbor press like this
pretty much every factory has one of them. I've seen one at Gubbels (Big Ben, Hilson, Porsche design, the Al Pascia Curvy, ...) and last week I saw one at Maitre Pipier Genod in St Claude. But I still have no idea where to get one... I'm considering making one myself out of hardwood. can't be THAT d...

Re: Keyholes and endcaps
Curious if you folks tend to leave a keyhole on your shank exposed or like to cap,it off with something like decorative wood, flat Japanese ebonite or arcrylic etc? I got a couple pipes that I want to do a military style push in tenon on and the keyhole looks ugly to me in this context. Another tri...

Re: Author stem (UPDATED)
Looks good to my untrained eye, especially the stummel. I'd take a bit of the top of the stem, and perhaps even slightly lessen the bend, so that the button is pretty much horizontal instead of pointing down like it is now.

Contimac, so I'm assuming you're in Europe. Earlier posts indicate you're in Denmark? If you're in Europe, have a look at the QCTP's sold by Paulimot (paulimot.de or amazon.de), I have one of them and they work great! I've got a few pictures of it on my website: http://massispipes.com/img/workshop/s...
