Re: Going to try bamboo.

You insert a drill rod blank into the airway, then press-fit/seat cut-to-length soft metal pins into the opposing holes, and stake all four ends into little mushrooms simultaneously with a single whack using a mallet & setting tool. Mechanical permanence in .001 seconds. :-D Forgive me, I'm try...

Re: Going to try bamboo.

I drill the bamboo with the bit in the lathe chuck, like in freehand drilling, constantly turning the bamboo 90 degrees, back and forth, to be sure it is going straight, and cutting slowly, and carefully, as there are parts where it catches and pulls. Once drilled, I soak the mortises with thin CA g...

Re: Airway Drilling Help

Try starting the airway with stub length bits. They are shorter and will diflect less. Then switch to the longer bits. I got mine from McMaster....

Also, drill slowly. Small bites, clear chips.

extension lining

What do you recommend in an extension such as this Sixten, as far as lining the extension with a briar insert? I believe this is horn, but I'm thinking of boxwood. Is it safe to have part of the draught drilling to be boxwood? Or better to add briar? thanks, Jeremy https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2...

Re: Shaping

From what place I imagine you are at in the process, I would think making one pipe at a time is more beneficial (also, since your other post about making war clubs....). Especially if you are turning pipes. You might turn and drill 5 stummels, but then once you fit and shape a stem, and remove the b...

Re: How Do I Stop Making War Clubs?

I wouldn't toss a stummel because it has TOO much material on it.... just keep removing material until you have something closer to what you were shooting for. I think it's pretty typical to start out my making big heavy pipes, and then slowly refine. I remember my first trip to the Vegas pipe show,...

Re: Correcting a Pipe's Manufacturing Errors 2 -- (video set)

One question about shank taper: In the video you talked about the barrel of the saddle having a slight outward flare. Do you think this same applies to a looooong shanked lovat, or similar? Or would the taper from bowl down the shank continue through the barrel (assuming saddle stem) and then the bl...
