Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.
Let me expand on this statement a bit. I realize after reading it that I kind of left you hanging. If you haven't already done so, there's other tooling up that needs to be done with a wood lathe. I'll mention a few things here. It goes without saying, but turning tools are required if you're going...

Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.
These are awesome if you have a nova chuck. Steve's jaws work on Nova chucks as well. http://www.woodworkingshop.com/product/te06034/ These are the jaws that i wanted to get, but i don't have a Nova chuck. Does Oneway make a set that are comparable to these, or would it be beneficial for me to just...

Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.
I purchased the Oneway Talon, and am now looking for some jaws to hold Rod stock. I am going to order a set of Shopdawg jaws for holding briar. If I were going to use 3/4 by 3/4 square acrylic blanks, would a set of #1 jaws for the oneway hold the blank well? It looks as if it would be good for roun...

Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.
I talked to a rep at Oneway today, and he indicated that the talon chuck would be the way to go for the size lathe I use. He also indicated that with the #2 jaws on the talon chuck, I would have a center gripping distance of approximately 2 3/4 inches. Would it be any larger area with the smokingdaw...

Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.
I noticed once i got it home that the supernova chuck does not allow for the jaws to move outside of the width of the chuck, so they max out at the width of the chuck, allowing only for approximately 2 1/4 inch chucking capacity. Do other manufacturers make chucks that can expand past the diameter o...

Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.
I finally purchased a lathe. I got a good deal on a Jet 1015 variable speed with a superNOVA 2 chuck. I figured I'd start out by learning how to carve on the wood lathe, and keep my eyes out for a nice metal lathe. All I need now is a good set of jaws.

Re: Discoloration in briar
ok thanks. I know this is probably one of those try it and figure it out kind of things, but would you venture to guess that absorbing other strange minerals/metals would change the flavor or taste when the pipe is smoked?
Yeah it is Algerian.

Discoloration in briar
So this piece of briar seems to have some discoloration. It doesn't appear to go away as I sand, but also doesn't appear to have any flaws. Can anyone explain what it might be from? And if you were going to finish a pipe that had this discoloration, would you try to leave it smoothe, or would you ru...

Re: Forstner Bits for Squaring shank face and rod stock.
Perfect....... Time to order a new bit. It's not really necessary to have the button side of the rod stock squared.
I figured that was the case after everyone asked why I ground the bit down.
Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.
Does anyone recognize this company, or tell me if this might be a good deal to look into? I am wondering if the size of this lathe is large enough for what i would do in pipe making.

Re: Forstner Bits for Squaring shank face and rod stock.
I ground it off because it was a problem for facing rod stock. I don't have a lathe to make the face of the rod stock even, so use my drill press and a forstner bit to make it flush fitting before drilling my hole in the rod stock for the delrin rod, and then again when i do the other side of the ro...

Forstner Bits for Squaring shank face and rod stock.
Does anyone know of a company out there that makes forstner bits without the point in the center that can be used for squaring rod stock? I bought one with a point, and ground the point off, but I think in doing so I compromised the effectiveness of the cutting surface, as it will cut on the edges, ...

Re: Importance of Shellac ??
Do you recommend waxed or unwaxed shellac flake? If i were to apply it after staining, and then follow my normal steps of white diamond and waxing, does it matter which shellac I purchase? I would like my pipes to retain a high luster shine after smoking, and currently with just white diamond and th...

Re: Tutorial for accent rings in stems.
Cool! Thanks Jeremiah! I was able to find that original tutorial I was reading. I should have known to check Pipedia... http://pipedia.org/wiki/Stem_Inserts It makes sense to glue them all at the same time and then drill. Would you suggest putting it in a C-clamp or vise to dry? I'll have to take ea...

Re: Tutorial for accent rings in stems.
I recall seeing that some time ago. I cannot find it. If you end up getting a metal lathe, it will be easy to drill and face the materials. If you are using wood lathe or drill press, you can square them with a forstner bit and clean up with sandpaper on a flat surface. Premal, I am using a drill p...

Tutorial for accent rings in stems.
I just recently saw a tutorial for adding accent rings to your stem using delrin rod. Now I can't for the life of me find it again. I don't think it was a Youtube video, but I can't be certain. I searched to forum for every possible combination of words associated with it, and can't find anything. E...

Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.
The motor on my Delta midi went out. You'll have to find an aftermarket because the motor has been discontinued by the manufacturer. Not too big a deal but the easy convenience of swapping out parts won't be there. Wayne, I saw that in another feed. I also read about the Rikon. Between the Rikon an...

Re: Lathe Chuck Advice.
As far as my current budget goes, I may be held to getting just a wood lathe. I have searched local places for used wood lathes and found one I think might be a good deal if i can get it for the advertised price or less. What do you guys think of this one? Has anyone used one similar? http://lynchbu...

Re: Sanding steps before buffing
I have had great luck sanding my pipes using:
120,220,320,400,600
Then under stain black, brown, or whatever other darker color for contrast.
Sand again at 600 to remove the under stain, before applying the second color.
