Re: Another All Briar
I posted one crappy pipe so I guess this allows me to make a comment. The button from the top view looks uneven. Illusion? But Wayne, I think it's a great pipe. The blast is really good too. Thanks for posting it. When the pros post it helps us uneducated new makers see the way pipes should be...

Re: Need help facing on a drill press
I bolted my drill press to the basement floor today and that did help. It is a substantial press I got at a good price from a gunsmith but it is what it is. I now know fully what George was saying about a drill press that is rock solid/steady. Even with the press bolted down, there is flex in the co...

Re: Need help facing on a drill press
You'll be a lot happier once you graduate to a lathe and pin gauges or a metal lathe. I know I will and I plan on getting a lathe someday. I just haven't made enough pipes to justify it. I want to make sure I'm going to stick with pipe making before I invest in a lathe. So, I'm stuck with the drill...

Need help facing on a drill press
I've been playing around using forstner bits on a drill press to face rod stock and delrin with little success so far. I've not used a forstner before so I guess I don't fully understand how they cut. Maybe it's the speed or the placement of the stock with respect to the cutting blade? In the pictur...

Re: Paper Towel Test
What about if you use shellac? Wouldn't that essentially cover the stain and prevent this.

Re: Buffing with Tripoli?
Does anyone know if buffing/compounds prevent stain penetration (such as buffing off a base stain when contrast staining). Or, should sandpaper only be used until after the final top stain, shellac if used, then buff?sandahlpipe wrote:I often buff in between grits to reveal scratches and then go back and sand.

Re: Buffing with Tripoli?
Some suggested to me (not to name names) that using tripoli at all is undesirable as it does fill the pores. So the last pipe I made I sanded to 2000 with abralon, skipped the coarse Menzerna compound and went directly to the medium. The jury is still out as I can't say the finish was much better. B...

Re: On Making Classics for Your First Pipes
I completely agree with the notion of new makers copying pipes. For me, I really do feel most comfortable copying a straight billiard because I have several good examples that I own and can study. I also think it does teach you to make straight lines. So that made it a logical choice for me. At this...

I am re-straining myself from going to harbor freight, but I really do need a couple of 4" ones. Last time I went to pick up just a couple of things, I was at the checkout with a full shopping cart and it was 5 hours later. What do you use the 4" ones for? Also, any tricks to make a Beall...

Got this from Harbor Freight for $3.99 vs. the $16.00 I paid at Home Depot. It looks just fine.

Re: disk sanders
I just went through this recently and I'll share what I did based on inputs from people here. I'm not saying it's the best but it's what I did. For rough shaping : Angle grinder backer with 36 Grit fiber disk. I'm actually learning with the 50 grit. The benefit is that this setup is very thin which ...

Norton A275 Sandpaper
I assume some of you guys know about this stuff but I've found it to the best sandpaper I've used to date. You can buy it elsewhere but here is a link at Beall and they have a lot of different grits. http://www.bealltool.com/products/other/sandpaper.php It's just really great stuff and lasts forever...

I think Steve is way to successful. He didn't make his business. Someone else did. As such, I think he should either be regulated more by the Gov't, pay a lot more taxes, or disperse some of his stock to us. It's just not fair to the rest of us.
