Re: Is this up to par for my first sale?

I was afraid I had an actual flat spot in the curve that I didn't notice. What I try to do to keep a consistent line is just shape the pipe until I can rock it like a rocking chair smoothly and not feel wobble or resistance in that motion

Re: Is this up to par for my first sale?

Ok I think I see what you're saying. The curve once you reach the shank is just a little too steep?

Re: Is this up to par for my first sale?

So this is where the technical and the artistic collide. I would argue that you establish a nice curve with the shank, and also a nice curve with the bowl. They don't flow into one another seemlessly however, and they should. There's a "flat spot", a place where neither curve continues it...

Re: Is this up to par for my first sale?

Alright I'll check that out and fix it if that's the case. In regards to the wobble in shaping if I sent you a good picture against a white background is there anyway you could show me where the wobble is? I'm not arguing that there isn't one I just want to know where it is so I can get a better eye...

Re: Is this up to par for my first sale?

Alright cool. Yeah I was trying to do a different style saddle to kind of keep the smooth flow of the pipe going with out doing just a straight taper stem. it Isnt quite as steep as a typical saddle Ill work on that. thanks for the feed back

Re: #8 please help me get closer to selling

Can you buff and use carnauba wax over these alternative finishes? Like say I do a French polish do I then buff over that and then carny a wax?

I plan on doing some experimenting this weekend with French polish and Danish oil

Re: #8 please help me get closer to selling

Alright awesome thanks guys I'll definitely check those threads out. What about renaissance wax have any of you heard of using that on pipes? I've been doing some work with a really great wood worker in my area and he uses that a lot. Also do you need to look at the toxicity of a finish for a pipe o...

Re: #8 please help me get closer to selling

I agree with most of the previous comments. The only thing I would add is that it looks like the polish/final buff could be a bit better/shinier. Also, on the third pic down it looks like there is a patch of something towards the top of the bowl...Maybe a bit of tripoli or other wax that got caked ...

2. Stabilize the mortise with something like shellac or wax.
What exactly do you mean by stabilizing the mortise?
