Re: Elbows

Maybe make nice big handles for your files. Sometimes the elbow pain comes from exertion in your hands, and keeping your hands as relaxed as possible may do the trick. quote] This too. Sometimes it takes enough repetition to hurt to make you find a better way to do things. I'm working on this batch...

Re: I'm almost a pipe maker!

Still no lathe, Tyler? I thought you'd gotten a Jet or some such. That little SB today wasn't an "almost." "Almost" is when you talk to the guy about it, he says he'll hold it for you, you jump in your truck, and just when you get there another guy is pulling out with the lathe ...

Re: Elbows

Problem with repetitive motion injuries is that unless you can quit doing what causes them they often don't just go away, and if you could quit what causes them you wouldn't have them in the first place. Are you holding the stem with one hand and filing with the other? If so, find a way to immobiliz...

Re: Southbend 9 a near me....thoughts?

If you can afford it, you might get a lot of your money back just selling the lever collet closer. Pretty rare on a 9". Collets won't be that useful for stems, as the biggest 3C is about 1/2". Looks nice, though. Hard to see how worn it is from the photos, but a pretty good price for a mod...

Re: Last months efforts

No doubt, then, you've read Oliver Sacks. A different sense of perspective could be a gift, just taking time to learn how to apply it. Persevere. Sometimes it takes a number of pipes to hit your stride. I still cringe sometimes seeing pipes that I thought were pretty good in 2004 (and even much late...

Re: Can you become a great pipemaker and never buy a lathe

SNIP Who makes the lightest 9 inch metal lathe? Weight is more my problem then size. I like the 10 inch grizzly, but how the heck do you get a 400lb lathe into the basement? the 7 inch, which would be barely workable, is at least only 80lbs. Are there any in the 200 lb range? -Nate Better a midi wo...

Re: Forstner Bit produces Tapered Face

Todd, Yes, I am using delrin. I have ordered some turning chisels to make an attempt at true tenons. The play isnt extreme, its just noticable. I dont know why wood lathes have it. I have a temporary shim for now just to take up some of the slack. I will probably end up ordering some brass shimming...

Re: Forstner Bit produces Tapered Face

You don't want a brad point drill for mortises, as you've discovered. Just use a standard twist drill. As for the Forstner bit, there are two ways it will cut a shallow cone like you describe. First, the bit can be ground that way, or else your tailstock alignment can be out. If you're using a wood ...

Re: Which is a better buy?

Yep, that explains that. If strictly for pipe making, I'd be on the lookout for a slightly larger lathe and avoid the lathe/mill combos. Both the lathe/mill and 7" lathe are marketed to hobbyists and are apt to be cheaply made. If nobody imports a 9" lathe of larger I suppose you're stuck,...

Re: Can you become a great pipemaker and never buy a lathe

If you look at some of the videos of British makers, the lathes they use for much of the work consist of little more than a spindle with a chuck and a movable tool rest, kind of like what you might want to turn bowls, though I think most hobby bowl makers just use regular wood lathes. But for the tr...

Re: Should I buy this craftsman metal lathe?

I'll be the contrarian. I owned a 6 inch Craftsman for a number of years, and while it's better than no lathe at all, the best reason to pay $350 for it would be to sell it for more. I didn't see the listing so I don't know exactly which model, but if one is shopping for a lathe I think a 9 or 10 in...

Re: Lathe Intervention

I had exactly the same problem when my lathe was new out of the box, it turned out that the alan bolt was slightly longer than allowed for in the threaded hole, no matter how much I tightened it the tail stock would move. My solution was a simple thick washer. David. That sounds like a good answer....
